Thanks for a wonderful web site...now does anyone anywhere know how I can get a C.D. of Harmony Row, or better yet, a copy of the box set "Jack Bruce"?

We just went into the 60 Minutes Official Site and asked for a feature on Jack Bruce. There are a lot of loyal fans visiting Rope Ladder. It would be nice if they could all visit the 60 Minutes Official Site and request a segment on Jack. Once you go into the 60 Minutes site you go into Feedback, hit Request, type in your request and hit Send. You also need to select the 60 Minutes category from the Pulldown. If enough of us bombard the show that thought Jeff Beck was Jack Bruce, the more chance we all have of seeing the world's greatest get some of the recognition he deserves. Thanks - M&L.

Jack, fantastic to see and hear you in the usual superb and eclectic condition! I took my family to see Ringo's All Starr Band last night in St.Paul, and despite the rather gruesome conditions, with the loathsome, noisy, talentless ravers down the lane stepping all over Eric Carmen's "Rachmaninoff Rock" the band sounded fabulous. In particular, the Indian "raga-like" extended solo on White Room grabbed me by the throat and heart at the same time. A virtuosic display of polyrhythmic and polytonal permutation of a song that I never heard better live (of course I should revise to state, with more than a three piece). The performance compelled me to dig out Songs for a Tailor, Harmony Row, Out of the Storm, etc. to listen and remember my inspiration on bass guitar. It was obvious that the band rose to a different level of musicianship when you were leading. Keep playing and influencing. Yours with much humility, Darrel

Dear Mr. Bruce, The last time we saw you was in a small club in Detroit (your LAST tour with Ginger around 1989). We sat at the very front table and have not yet gotten over the magnitude of your talent. (Did you get the shortbread or did the crew eat it...from a great Scottish bakery). We would travel anywhere to see you perform again...will it happen soon? One question...while traveling with the Allstars band how did you decide who was going to sing...you or Gary Brooker? - The best to you! - D&D Meconi

Hello Aussie Jack Bruce fans, we're in the process of forming Friends Of Jack Bruce (Australia). The idea of our group is to get Oz fans together on the net to share info on Jack Bruce and to let each other know of shops carrying JB recordings, and magazines etc. being released in Oz containing interviews with JB. With regular JB Guestbook visitors, such as Dennis Lawrenson and Ron Wilson, we also intend requesting Jack Bruce tracks to be played on national radio stations (eg.Triple J). If you're interested, please contact M&L or Dennis Lawrenson (e-Mail addresses listed in Guestbook).

Jack/Derek, Your extended family is "Waiting On A Word " on news of the release of the new album ...We're all hungry for new masterpieces ! Hope to hear some good news soon given that it's been in the can for 6 months. Jack, just listened to a song I hadn't heard before of you and Nick Kershaw that you did in 1988.I think it was titled "All Alone",it was great music and had a good commercial feel about it ,but so typically (as we're used to)was overlooked by the music industry moovers and shakers.I just wanted to mention that I thought it was a great collaborative effort. You never cease to amaze me with your musical diversity ! About a week ago, with the help of Dennis Lawrenson, we started up Friends Of Jack Bruce (Australia) for people in Oz to get together on the net and discuss such things as where Jack Bruce CDs can be purchased in Oz. We're also going to use "strength in numbers" to encourage radio stations to play some of Jack's music. Obviously a similar organisation could be started up in other parts of the world. Anyway, if you're in Australia and would like to join our free group, please contact us on friendsofjbruce@hotmail.com We are at present waiting for word from a major Sydney music store regarding the availability of Jack Bruce material. HEY JACK

I HAVE BLOWN THREE OPPERTUNITIES TO SEE YOU LIVE AND HAVE BEEN KICKING MYSELF EVER SINCE. FIRST WAS WITH CREAM IN 1967 IN SEATTLE. THEN LATER ON WITH WEST AND LAING IN SEATTLE AND LAST WITH THE RINGO TOUR IN ABOUT 93 OR SO AGAIN IN SEATTLE. MY BEST FRIEND OF 30 YEARS, DAVE, SHARES MY {OUR} STUPIDITY IN THIS MATTER. WE HAVE BOTH BEEN HUGE FANS OF YOUR WORK SINCE THE CREAM DAYS AND ALL WE CAN DO IS SHAKE OUR COLLECTIVE HEADS IN DISMAY OVER THIS FOLLY. WE WERE SORRY TO SEE THE RECENT RINGO TOUR DIDNT TAKE YOU ANY CLOSER TO US THAN TAHOE OR SAN DIEGO, AND NEITHER OF US IS IN THE KIND OF FINANCIAL BRACKET TO WARRANT THAT. IF YOU ARE ANYWHERE NEAR THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ON TOUR {SEATTLE, PORTLAND ORE., VANCOUVER B.C.} OR THE LIKE, WE NEED TO KNOW. WE HAVE BURNED OUT LITERALLY DOZENS OF YOUR RECORDINGS THROUGH THE YEARS {VINYL, 8 TRACKS, REEL TO REEL, CASSETTES, AND ARE NOW ON CD'S.} THANKS FOR ALL THE YEARS OF GREAT STUFF. ITS VERY FULLFILLING FOR YOUR FANS. DROP ME A NOTE IF YOU EVER GET A CHANCE AND ALTHOUGH I WILL KEEP CHECKING THIS SITE FOR TOUR SCEDULES, PUT ME ON A LIST OF FOLKS TO KEEP ABREAST OF YOUR UPCOMING FESTIVITIES. KEEP IT DOWN AS WE KEEP ON WONDERING.

I would like to know if Jack still thinks that J.S.Bach was 'the guv'nor' as far as bess playing goes. It was a quote from the Cream farewll video. Also, does Jack get into the classic these days. I am really into classical guitar now but I still really love the old cream stuff and so much that Jack has done since.

A quote from Leslie West in the magazine Guitarist January 1994, "Playing with Jack was my dream of a lifetime....I couldn't believe that he (Felix Pappalardi) was producing my favourite group (Cream)! So when I got to play with him and then Jack it was like fulfilling a dream; I mean it was just hard to comprehend. I learned more from playing with Jack than anybody." - M&L.

I'm still in awe over seeing you here in San Diego back in June. I just loved watching how much you were into playing for the fans. It was such a treat! I think it would be fantastic if you got your own solo group going on tour. I hope what I read somewhere isn't true, and this is going to be Ringos' last tour. No more Jack! If it is, thanks for the memories.

Jack, for me you are a total inspiration and I find it very difficult to imagine my life without your music, your vocals and your one of a kind, distinctive groove, melodic and contrapuntal bass playing. It is without a doubt that you are a true master at your craft whether it be singing, bass playing, piano playing or composing. No other musician has ever moved me at a live situation the way you did when you sang THEME and GOLDEN DAYS at Koln, Germany in NOV. of 93. Yes Jack, I've traveled the world to see you, though you did call me crazy when we met at S.O.B.'S in '94 and I told you that I flew to Koln, Germany to see you both nights at your 50th birthday concert.

Dear Mr. Bruce, in 1976 I began playing the bass as a kid in Jr. high. I was such a big fan of yours that I begged my father for months (we didn't have much money so I had to save)to help me buy a used EBO. I really wanted an EB3 but couldn't afford one... I finally got the EBO and began playing in my first band-playing all Cream songs. I am in that same band after all these years, still playing most of the same music, although i do it on a Bass VI now! I have only had the opportunity to hear you play live once (1989 Question tour). If you ever feel the urge to visit, or sit in with your biggest fans, let me know. Best Wishes, Michael Jeff Scott Joe Chris Nancy

Delighted to be able to sign this guestbook. Jack Bruce was my great idol of the late 60s and 70s. The great trio of solo albums 'Songs for a Taylor' Harmony Row' and 'Out of the Storm' are marvellous and the latter two, in particular, full of intricate songs which only Becker/Fagen could match in composition complexity. Brilliant in live concert also, he's a fantastic musician and I'm proud he's a Scot! (Mustn't forget to praise Pete Brown also for the lyrics that have provided the base for Jack's music).

Dear Jack, A great website. I am 47 years-old, and have been an admirer of your unique and haunting songwriting and composition as far back as Cream. In addition to your incredible solo albums, some of the things you did with Leslie West and Corky Laing are still amazing to me. "Like a Plate" and "Out into the Fields" are original, mysterious and gorgeously rich. I have read some of the interviews you have given with respect to jazz, and I am in complete agreement. Improvisation is what real jazz is all about; not some saxiphonist (who will remain un-named) going "toot-toot". I used to argue with my friends that Cream (at least when you guys played live) was simply the first amplified (loud) jazz trio. Anyway, I used to turn Eric's channel off and listen to you and Ginger - what awesome counterpoint! I haven't had the opportunity to get any of your newer releases, and am looking forward to doing so shortly. I always wanted to thank you for the great music. I sincerely believe, as a fellow musician (34 years playing blues and rock) that you should be considered historically as one of this century's most original composeres. Thanks again and God bless you.

JACK, I GOT TO SAY THAT I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO YOU PLAYING FOR MANY YEARS,I THINK YOUR SINGING AND BASS PLAYING(ALONG WITH EVERY OTHER INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY!)IS TOTALLY THE BEST.YOU WERE ABSOLUTELY THE MOST TALENTED MEMBER OF CREAM(WITHOUT EXAGERATION). I WAS LISTENING TO SOME OF THE LIVE STUFF YOU DID WITH CREAM "SPOONFUL","TALES OF THE BRAVE ULLYSSES","DESERTED CITIES OF THE HEART",AND I HAVE TO SAY THE STUFF YOU WERE DOING WILL NEVER EVER BE DUPLICATED JUST TAKING PURE RAW TALENT INTO CONSIDERATION. JACK,I THINK CLAPTON'S REJECTION OF THE CREAM REUNION (THAT'S WHAT I HEARD) IS PURELY A DEFENSIVE MECHANISM - (BEING AFRAID OF BEING OUTPLAYED 0N STAGE TALENTWISE AND ENERGYWISE.) I HAVE A VERY DEEP RESPECT FOR WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED AND I HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON IN BOSTON. JACK AGAIN I THINK THE STUFF CREAM DID LIVE IS SO SUPERIOR TO WHAT OTHER GROUPS HAVE DONE.THE STUFF THAT YOU DID ON SPOONFUL (WHICH I'VE LISTENED TO 1000 TIMES)BLOWS ME AWAY EVERY TIME. P.S. I SAW YOU WITH RINGO AND THE GROUP ON DAVE LETTERMAN- YOU MUST HAVE BEEN DOING YOUR STUFF ON THE COMMERCIAL BREAK,I WAS SO PISSED THAT I COULDN'T SEE AND HEAR IT-WHEN THEY CUT BACK FROM THE COMMERCIAL IT WAS OBVIOUS THE CROWD WAS GETTING INTO IT. Dear Jack, Enjoyed your contribution to the James Jamerson tribute, 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown.' How sad that such a gifted man was largely overlooked during his lifetime. I've always loved your compositions that played around with the time signatures, i.e. 'Deserted Cities of the Heart,''As You Said,' etc. 'Like A Plate,' is one of the most astonishing feats of creativity I've ever heard on record. I have many bass students. Two things I tell them is, learn how to read music. And do yourself a favor and get some Jack Bruce recordings. I hope I will one day get the chance to see you live.

Dear Jack, Long time no see you. We originally met in 1981 further to an introduction of Don Airey or Cozy Powell (the first meeting was at Chez Louisette in Baker Street...and we continued at the pub next door) in regard to the Keith Emerson project, on which I was supposed to play guitar.

We rehearsed at the Bracknell Art Centre (where you proudly sported your porno guitar strap that a friend had artfully made for you out of multicoloured pieces of leather) in the summer of 1982 for some warm up gigs like the Windsor one you blew off because of sickness.

I still play the long riff you thought me from a song of yours dedicated to Charlie Parker, though I cannot remember the one I picked up in a few seconds (some odd time African thing) while John McLaughling could not play, as you told me.

Nothing really happened then, which was to be expected as ou told me that Keith had already asked you to join him when you left Cream, but you had told him to f... off.

We tried again to get something going with Dave Palmer from Jethro Tull in the spring of 1985 and you came from Germany to meet at the Coach and Hounds in Kensington. Then you decided that the material I had at that time was too classical for the mood you were in, so nothing happened and I moved to LA.

I cannot get through the old number so I have left a message with Pete Brown's answering machine, but obviously after only 15 years I do not know if that is him.

My latest venture is the PENTASYSTEM which makes the last few thousands years of music obsolete. Oddly enough that may suit you perfectly, so please check www.pentasystem.com and www.nidusprod/maestro.

I have just finished the record "12 JOKES FOR HEAVY METAL MANDOLIN" where there is a hell of a lot of Cream, but with the lead instrument being my newly invented HEAVY METAL MANDOLIN. It blows away guitar!

I have also finished the record "ANOTHER MILLENNIUM?", which is a fully blown "electric" orchestral record with full vocals, and is, in fact, not only a record, but the event of the millennium! No instrument from the past is used on this record, and even the drums are fully melodical!!!

Get in touch to let me know how to send you copies. I hope everything is well with you.

All the best

Alex

Jack (or you if I am so lucky to have your ear) has been a great influence on my playing. I have done lots of stuff from Rock and Roll, Reggae, Blues and lots of Jazz. I love jazz the most except for the fact that a lot of jazz players don't stick it out like Jack always has. I would love to play with you if you are ever in Chicago, if for only a song or two. I am 41 and have been playing ever since I fell in love you, John E., Jaco and Charlie Haden. Thanks

I know it's a long time since the BBM album I also know that there won't be another due to Gary Moore being a prat. What about BBW Bruce, Baker, Webb. Stan Webb is one of the best. Then again, what about BBC Bruce, Baker, Clapton. Perhaps shorten it to Cream or something. Go on do it whilst you're still alive.

In 1989 at a club {The Bayou} in Washington, D.C. I heard a performance. You sounded quite good and so did your band. A good number of fans waited a very long time to have an opportunity to see you. I did get a chance to shake your hand and you looked at me as if to say: "Thank you, if you could please get out of my way"... Ginger Baker left separately in a limo all by himself and a very nice guitarist by the name of Blues Saraceno did take the time to talk and sign autographs... I am a Professional Musician and have always found your work unique and creatively refreshing. "Thank you for being an inspiration!"

8/15/2000 Hi Jack! I saw you at the Goodbye Cream Tour in 1968 at the Los Angeles Forum and in about 1994 at the Ventura Theater when you joined forces with Ginger. Both were unforgettable. I have done my first CD, "Oceanskyland" and the band is of the same name. I dedicated track 5 (Smooth Transformations) to Jimi! The CD has a Cream, Jimi feel to it with a pop attitude. I'm sending a copy to a pub owner near you. He is the ex-husband of my masseuse. She told me you frequent the place. I hope he gets it to you! It would be great if you heard it. I like the song "Out Into The Fields" as recorded by the the Jack Bruce and Friends Band. Its' a really moving and powerful version and I just heard it for the first time the other day. Give it a listen. You will not be disappointed !!

Previous to this I had heard the same song by West, Bruce and Laing which was highly produced it seems.

Both versions are really good.

But I was completely blown away by the Friends version of Out Into The Fields.

Its a gem and well worth the time to listen.

Take Care.

The other day I was looking for a CD to play in the car and just happened to bump into my old copy of Disraeli Gears by Cream. I hadn't really given it a good listening to in some years. From the moment the music hit my ears, I felt suddenly drawn in by the shear beauty and intelligence of this music as if it was the first time I had ever heard it. By the time "Tales of Brave Ulysses" started, I found myself so emotionally involved, I almost had to stop the car. And the one element of the music which captivated me the most was that of Jack Bruce' awesome vocals, bass playing, and even more important, his writing. I was, to put it mildly, blown away. Shortly thereafter, I listened to the "Fresh Cream" CD and came away thinking just what an injustice it has been that such geniuses as Jack Bruce have been pushed out of the forefront in favor of the mediocrity of trendy bands and artists of the last twenty or so years. (I can still hear the ephoric harmonies of "I Feel Free" in my head as I write this). So when I discovered this web site, it touched my heart and soul to find that Jack is (and has been) very active and busy doing so many wonderful and creative things over these many years. And although I've always thought of Eric Clapton to be a great talent, it has always rubbed me that EC has garnered so much esteem and recognition, when in fact, Jack Bruce was always in my mind far more deservant of these accolades. At any rate, now that I have discovered this web site, I plan to make it a point in going back and playing catch up with regards to Jack's solo output and more recent projects. And being a professional singer/guitarist/songwriter myself, I find it great inspiration to rediscover one of the truly great musical influences that helped to spawn my own desire to make above average, high quality art. Jack Bruce set a standard so long ago that even I had almost forgotten about in light of the trite, immature music that gets precedence on the airwaves today. I only wish that there was a radio format today that plays only music of the rock masters, keeping those who are aware enough and who appreciate greatness, up to date on their current output. (Even NPR has a limited scope with regards to this). In lieu of this, I will sample some of Jack's current stuff on the Internet (and some of the things I've missed over the years) with great interest and will most certainly bookmark this web site and check back often. Thank you, Craig Marsden

I think that Mr. Bruces' influence as a musician, composer and singer goes well beyond record sales and airtime on the radio.

Most record stores in the USA have a "Bruce, Jack" section in the CD rack be it small or large --- but it is invariably there. That is a very tough market. Shelf space is highly limited.

Pop groups come and go.

Jacks' work will always be there for the next generation to discover and marvel at.

Whenever you mention Jack's name, people say, "Oh, the bass player with Cream." They don't seem to realise that Jack has been doing brilliant work since Cream, and that a lot of his best stuff has been his recent solo work. That's understandable when it's virtually impossible to buy Jack's CDs anywhere. It's as hard to buy his publicly released CDs as his bootlegs. Let's hope his solo recordings can be re-released worldwide. Regards - M&L.

NOT TAKING AWAY FROM THE TALENT NOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF ERIC CLAPTON, CREAM WAS A TRUE COLLABORATION. I GET VERY TIRED OF HEARING DISC JOCKEYS REFER TO CREAM SONGS AS 'ERIC CLAPTON SONGS'. THERE WERE ACTUALLY FOUR GREAT INSTRUMENTS IN THE BAND- THE FOURTH BEING JACK'S VOICE.I STILL LISTEN TO CREAM MUSIC ALMOST EVERY DAY AND I FIND IT UNBELEIVABLE HOW GOOD THEY WERE - ESPECIALLY STACKED UP AGAINST TODAYS SO CALLED MUSICIANS. Hey Jack, I lost track of how many times I saw the Cream in San Francisco. NEVER missed you guys when you were at the Fillmore or Winterland.(Only 3 bucks!) I don't know why, but being a drummer myself, I always hated the way the local radio stations would cut out ANY drum solo on a song they would play. They even turned off Ringo and they'd NEVER play "Toad" in a million years. Something against "speed" I think. Fuckin' assholes WISH they could play like Ginger. How is Ginger these days? "Fat" and healthy I hope. "Fresh Cream" was always my fav-o-rite album from you guys. "Pressed Rat & Wart Hog" LIVE! Take care. Randall.

As I sat at the computer a few days ago with the television on in the other room, I suddenly heard the opening chords to 'White Room'. I rushed in to see an ad for Apple computers. I find it interesting that with thousands of "classic rock" songs to choose from, 'I Feel Free' and now 'White Room' have been chosen by these major corporations to sell their products, especially since the type of computers advertised are not the kind that would appeal to people in the age group most familiar with the music of Cream. They're of the type marketed to younger consumers. It only goes to show that the music of Cream/Jack Bruce is truly timeless. Tonight MTV put on their self-indulgent display of mostly no-talent insipid rubbish; there wasn't a single act on that show worthy of tuning Jack's axe. After listening to his Blink 182 CD the other day, my 13 year old son asked me to play 'Pollution Woman' from West, Bruce and Laing's first album. I taught my son to learn to appreciate a variety of musical styles from classical to "pop" music and to not let others dictate what he listens to. It appears that my guidance has rubbed off on him; he has expressed a desire to see Jack in concert with me when he tours again with his own band. I never pushed my taste in music on him, he has come to appreciate Jack's music on his own just from being exposed to it when I play it. Let's hope the new album and tour happen soon. C'mon Jack, you've got the next generation lining up to see you now, so let's get busy. This site is testament to how much you are appreciated by fans of 'real' music throughout the world. WE KNOW how incredibly individual and original your music is and how inspired and deep from within your soul you compose, sing and play and that's why we love you and wait with such anticipation for your new work. Could you please give us some hint as to when the new album may be released? C'mon Jack, it's 'Traintime'. Waiting impatiently in New Jersey.

I think I mentiond this before, but the BBC did a documentary on Jack in 1969 called Rope Ladder To The Moon. I think it was directed by Tony Palmer. From what I can remeber they had shots of him on his island, at a Celtic v Rangers football match as well as walking around streets of Glasgow where he grew up. He played several tracks from Songs for a Tailor with Spedding, Hiseman, Heckstall-Smith, Lowther and co as well as some Things we Like sort of stuff with just Hiseman and Heckstall-Smith. Can anyone else remember this. Maybe we should get in touch with BBC archives to see if it still exists. What say you Jack fans?

I noticed a couple of omissions in the discography. Jack was one of 2 bass players on Michael Gibbs first recording on Deram called Michael Gibbs. (1970 I think) He is on most tracks and his powerful counterpoint bass line on the closing track is truly awesome. One of his finest moments in my opinion. The album is available on CD and is a forgotten classic. It features Chris Spedding, Ray Russell, John Marshall, Tony Oxley, John Surman, Ray Warleigh, Alan Skidmore and many others. Also he appeared on a few tracks of a double album by Donovan in the 60s. Cant remember the name and I have never heard it.

In '67, Cream played at the (now long gone) New Haven (Connecticut) Arena.

Such was the level of performance (not to mention the decibels) that the unusually rowdy crowd noted prior to the show was reduced to humble silence on the way out following the show.

Stunning event.

A budding lead guitarist, at that time, I asked a huge, bearded roadie, wearing an old greek fisherman's cap, if I could have a look at Clapton's firebird, a few minutes after the show was over. Chap glanced at the guitar (leaning against the Marshall stack) and back at me, and finally muttered "yeah, alright...".

And to my utter amazement, when he handed me the instrument, I found that the strings were the thickness of telephone cables, and sat damn near a half inch off the neck at the octave. Yet I'd just heard an entire evening of whole-note bends and vibratos.

Serious paradigm shift -- I'll never forget it.

Thanks, Jack for so many years of phenomenal songs and sounds!

Lachlan

If Jack Bruce ever reads this, I want you to know that I´m very thankful for all the experiences I´ve had through following you as an artist. Since the days of Cream I think you really has developed both as a musician an as a human being. I´m looking forward to meet your new album with pleasure. I also wish you all well with your life and living! Harald
