Jack: I was an avid fan of Cream and saw you, Eric and Ginger during the final tour in November 1968. You were my favorite member of that super group and I tried to be like you (I did play bass at the time). You also wrote the group's best songs (except for the the old blues standards by greats like Robert Johnson and Skip James). I just found about your surgery, and am pleased that you are recovering.

Jack,

You have mentioned that something special will occur next year...................we can only hope and pray to the G-DS of music that you are refering to a CREAM Reunion. We know that you and Ginger would go for it, Clapton is the only hold out...........or is he?? 2005 WILL BE A CREAM YEAR

Jack, I felt moved to write this after visiting your website for the first time in a while and finding the news about your illness, the operation and your recovery. Because you have been so important to my musical development (amongst other things, without you I would haven't discovered the guv'nor, J.S.Bach), I wanted to write and say a profound "thank you".

Because of your obvious respect for classical music (which now includes jazz, blues and rock) I feel sure you will understand what I write below about Cream and Lifetime, who were truly "classic".

I was never into rock bands in which the other members simply supported the guitar hero. Some people still don't get the idea that Cream were truly great because they were perhaps the ONLY rock band in which all three members were equally leading while yet really listening to each other. Three tremendously free musical talents steaming ahead in a spirit of creative joy, sparking and stimulating each other. I believe it was this image of evident musical brotherhood (despite or even because of the rows between you and Ginger)and this image of such dynamic joyous creativity in action that made people love Cream so much and remember you all so affectionately. That love surprised the band members themselves on 26 Nov 1968 at the farewell gig at the Albert Hall, right Jack ? As you once said, Jack, "Cream was really a jazz band; only we didn't tell Eric". The very best example of Cream's genius, I feel is "Spoonful" on the "Wheels of Fire". The greatest improvisation in the history of rock I have always felt, it is perfectly balanced; everything happens just at the right instant - every Clapton chord, every Bruce bass note, every Baker cymbal hit - just perfection. The song around the improvisation is also a blues masterpiece with tremendous phrasing and nuances of feeling - one of your greatest pieces of singing. I have listened to "Spoonful" hundreds of times, never tiring of it. It is an inspiration to hear such a performance of three great musicians inspiring each other at such a dynamic level. The only time I've heard anything comparable was when you played in "Lifetime" in Nov 1970 at Manchester University - the greatest electric gig I've ever been to - a life-changing revelation for me. The lack of a Lifetime live album from 1970 is a great loss to music.

I thank you deeply for all the wonderful music you've put into the world, Jack, not least for the bass which you single-handedly ennobled, and I wish you many more equally creative years ahead.

Terry

You have been in my musical life since the 60's. you have always been one the premier "Lead Bassist's" of all time as well as your keyboard abilities. If you ever have time to respond, One of my favorite albums is West Bruce & Lang "What ever turns you on" which i still have; How did you ever get together with this mid-west guitarist? I will always have a special place in my heart for your "Slow Blues" from the above mentioned album. Was West and Lang there when you did the keyboards? I was in the military at the time of this album release, and heard some cuts from John Peel on Radio Luxenburg; We drove to a Canadian PX in the Black Forest to buy it. I am so gla you are still out there,..... Thanks for everything.

Jack, I grew up on bass listening to you as my absolute idol and inspiration, in the seventies. I had my elbow on the stage when you played the ROXY on sunset in '76, when you played the fretless. I wasn`t the only one who saw the neck smoking when you were finished that night. Yours was the best concert I`ve ever seen, bar NONE! I bought an EB-3 and had a lot of fun playing in bands in the seventies. I owe all of that to you, and I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart , for you made it what it was for me. Theres no words to convey the depth of your influence but I know your soul touched mine somehow and truly affected my life in a magical way through your excellent music. You have always been my main hero !

Hoping you're doing well Jack! Take care, Tristan

I play bass too. Certainly, Jack Bruce and Chris Squire are the most important bass players for me. I have the completely collection of Cream and I hear "Spoon Full" (Wheels of Fire) almost every day. Nobody plays bass guitar like Jack. He is unique. Jim Roberts wrote that Jack "inspired him to become a bass player" (How The Fender Bass Changed The World). I hope that Jack Bruce come and play here, in Brazil, some day. The first ticket will be mine. Long live, Jack! Jim Roberts escreveu que Jack "o inspirou a se tornar um baixista" (How The Fender Bass Changed The World). Eu espero que Jack Bruce possa vir e tocar aqui, no Brasil, algum dia. O primeiro ingresso será meu. Vida longa, Jack!

Ive listened to cream since 1968,played guitar for over 25 years.I have always enjoyed your playing and because of your influence im considering switching to bass,in theses days of nothing but guitarists a good bassist is hard to find..you are a great bassist..always have been. You have shown me 2 things through your playing..1 a bassist can write songs..2 a bassist can lead a band.Of course guitarists dont like that fact.Hope you get back with cream, just so we can see the power once again.Best wishes...a dedicated fan..36 years.

Just read that Cream are considering playing again. Hooray, for that must mean you are feeling much better. I recently purchased a CD of the BBC sessions. That version of "Politician" is fantastic, it is now my favorite recording by Cream. If the reunion goes well in London, hopefully Cream will cross the pond and play some shows in America. Good luck, and all the best.

Hello Jack,

It's ZE BOND ROCKS. We hope you are feeling better and ready to play again. I hear that a Cream reunion/rehersals and shows in London are in the works....That will be Great!!!...I hope we can be there....Cream Rocks!

It was a pleasure to meet you & your wife at the train station in Leicester earlier this Spring(end of May.) Lyn Ze was carrying her guitar(Les Paul) and we talked with you for a minute. We asked you for directions to the bus station.

We were so disoriented & didn't have a chance to explain our situation. We were invited to come over to England from America to play a benefit for Parkinson's Disease in the West Midlands at the end of May put on ex-Budgie member Pete Boot. We payed our own way there. He arranged an opening gig for us(for which we didn't get paid), We recieved our picture & press in the Express & Star(Walsall edition), did some interviews for a music magazine and then were dropped from the show and left at the Train Station in Wolverhampton......without explanation, $$$ or direction.

We struggled & stood strong thru it all....Walked alot(passed many Clock towers) and played at Vic's Pub. We sold our band CD's & T-shirts on the street to earn $$$ for bus tix and food and we were very glad to make it to Amsterdam-where we had paying gigs that we booked ourselves.

Please visit our website @ http://www.zebondrocks.com and let us know if there are any upcoming performances that you might need an opening band for. Royal Albert Hall, etc. We are a full sounding, dedicated 2-piece band.

ZE BOND ROCKS would like to send you a CD sometime. Thanks for the cigarette & Tell Nancy we said hello.

Glad to hear that you are on the "road" to recovery. Also was chuffed to buts to hear that the 3 of you are reforming next year. I have always said that the 2 Bands that I'm sorry I never saw were Jimi Hendrix and the Experience plus Cream. I know that Hendrix is not an option but seeing Cream is a real bonus. I just hope that I can get tickets as living in the North East of Scotland makes it difficult at times. All the best, and I look forward to seeing you (hopefully) at the R.A.H. Alan Mackie

my dad had liver cancer and tried experimental treatments, to try and defeat it. i hope the technology has advanced enough in this time and age to help a person heal from this life threatening disease. I must admit that when i saw the cream at the syndrome in chicago in 68, that ginger baker was my hero, even though he sounded like 10 drummers playing at one time, he needed you jack, to compliment his playing when he wasn't doing a solo. When you do get on your feet again, and start rehearsal for the re-union at ralh,a song that would really sound good with a cream touch,is the john mayall tune "california". i heard a version of that song by the cashman vaquero band years ago, and thought that the cream could really do a great jam on this tune. get better soon before that bass and amp start getting dusty. dd

Hi Jack, I last saw you live with West, Bruce and Laing in the Seattle Center Arena many years ago; I have never been so impressed w a singer nor any other bass player. Lately, I have been exploring the possibility of getting fine artists like you of our generation prime time airplay in the US market. I have been dismayed to find that artists such as Neil Young get so little exposure for their current work that they turn to other media, like moviemaking! I feel your current/recent work as well as most of your solo recorded performances stand up well to the classic rock standards played by our local C Rock stations, but they won't play them. The genra is the same or similar, so what's the problem? I hear there will be a live Cream reunion next year. I wonder if you three can break this "spell" for the rest of the fine, more matured rock artists who are being frozen out! I have suggested to several stations that they try playing say a "Cream" version of "White Room" with one of your or Eric's newer renditions with no success. What do you think is up with this?

I'm glad I visited the guest-book. I was unaware of any rumblings about a Cream re-union. Great news. I saw Cream at the Family Dog in Denver, Colorado in 1967 when I was really too young (12) to go to concerts.

Anyone out their find it ironic that the least versitile and technically gifted of the Trio, (Clapton) has had the most successful career? Don't get me wrong, I've always loved Clapton's playing, but unlike Jack, your never going to see Eric play with a Tony Williams, a John McGlaughlin, a Larry Coryell etc. I was always disapointed that Eric never got into a Jazz /Blues thing like a Kenny Burrel or like George Benson with Jimmy Smith. Unlike Jack, he never learned to play changes. Share your thoughts with me.

Glad to hear you are recovering well! I am 17 and have been listening to Cream since I was knee high, it was all my dad would play! I have always enjoyed your music, and now I am older I have tracked down your back catologue, which I enjoy just as much as the Cream stuff. Hope the rumours of a reunion are true! If they are I would give my right arm to come and see the shows, as, for obvious reasons I was just a bit too late to see Cream in 1968!

Take care & hope to see you on tour soon

Jack, I was delighted when I heard about the Cream reunion, but I have one request. Keep Eric Clapton on his toes. He is a great guitarist, but for the last thirty years he has been relying on his routine. He seems to shun adventure and musical challenge. (How did he get away with that for so long?) So make sure he doesn't claim the position of frontman. Let him concentrate on his guitar and leave the lead vocals to you. He can sing harmony and do the lead vocals in crossroads and badge, but no more.

At first I could not take it for real, the rumoured reunion but there it is, its now official: after 37 Years of wishing & hoping its finally true: the three Gods of contemporary music are leaving the Olympus and are showing us their good grace.... But it will be a hefty pelgrimage to London, next year. Only 4 shows are planned and I'm afraid that lots of tickets will go to people who are close to the nucleus of the musical-industrial complex. Nonetheless I'm thrilled and will do anything to get there... This is the text I borrowed from Eric's [Where's Eric] site:

CREAM REUNION: IT'S OFFICIAL! After weeks of speculation it was announced today by Eric Clapton that legendary 60s supergroup Cream will reunite for 4 shows at London's Royal Albert Hall. The venue was the scene of the trio's last appearance in 1968.

Concert appearances have been scheduled for May 2005. Information regarding ticket sales has not yet been made public. These are the only Cream concerts scheduled. Details will be posted here as they become available.

Eric Clapton made the announcement on BBC Radio 2's Johnnie Walker show. The shows will be recorded. Eric also said that tickets will go on sale soon.

After leaving John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1966, Eric accepted drummer Ginger Baker's offer to start a new band. Eric suggested bassist Jack Bruce. During its two-year life span, Cream - as in "cream of the crop" - released four albums: Fresh Cream (1966), Disraeli Gears (1967), Wheels of Fire (1968), and Goodbye (1968). The band's performances were not a series of three-minute hit song recreations but featured ground-breaking long-form improvisation around album cuts. The band's final two performances on 26 November 1968 at London's Royal Albert Hall were filmed. Farewell Cream has been released on DVD demonstrating the band's continuing popularity over the years. In the decades since the band broke up in late 1968, countless musicians have pointed to the power trio as an important influence on their own playing and style and the hard rock genre.

Cream reunited once before in January 1993 when they performed three songs at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

What a weekend for receiving mixed news... The bad news first is that Dick Heckstall-Smith has passed away. What a great shame and what a great player. His playing on "Things We Like" in particular was quite inspired. I saw him play in concert with Jack many years ago, and he was an outstanding musician.

It must be especially heartbreaking for Jack, coming as it does, so soon after recovering from his own serious illness. D H-S will be greatly missed amongst all lovers of great jazz and blues.

Of course, very sadly, that puts a hude dampener on the good news. The latter is of course that Eric finally confirmed the rumours of the long awaited Cream Reunion. He spoke on last Friday's BBC Radio 2 "Johnny Walker Show" and revealed that 4 shows will be played next May at Cream's ancestral concert home - The Royal Albert Hall in London.

Apparently they will all be recorded for posterity. (I hope they receive better treatment than the last recordings made there of Cream back in 1968.)

And I suppose I'd better start queueing now.....

I'm sure we are all saddened by the death of Dick Heckstall-Smith. I remember buying my first Alexis Korner LP on Ace of Clubs and being turned on by the the music. Graham Bond followed, then I managed to see Dick with the Mayall Bare Wires band, which contained the nucleus of Collosseum. I saw Collosseum many, many times and they remain to this day one of my favourite bands - one of my favourite numbers being Tanglewood 65. How will he be replaced on the forthcoming tour, I wonder. I only saw him with Jack on two occasions but thoroughly enjoyed his contributions. One of my favourites is his playing on a trio with John James the acoustic guitarist. I remember he was in the crowd at the Cuicoland debut at Londons Jazz Cafe, enjoying his mate's new line up. I have just got his book and was looking forward to getting stuck into it when I was stunned by the news on Jack's web site. A great guy, a great player and a stalwart of the great British Blues scene. Rest in peace, Dick.

Jack,

I am so sorry to hear of Dick's death...he was a fantastic musician and the godfather of the British blues scene for so many years...he will be terribly missed.

After hearing Fresh Cream in 1966 and later Disraeli Gears I was taken aback when I first heard the Colosseum classic, 'Those who are about to die, we salute you'.

What a band! the fact that they are still making records AND touring is a testament to the great music that Jon Hiseman and the band have written and played over all these years.

It's ironic that with Dick's illness, Jon's wife Barbara Thompson has been filling in on saxes with Colosseum on gigs. Given Barbara's own battle's with illness the band still gets it on!

As soon as I get home tonight I will slip on the Colosseum live DVD and relive the great Dick Heckstall-Smith as he would like to be remembered...on fire with one of the world's most underated bands.

I hope your health is improving and it's not too long before you are back on the road.

I am gonna sit on the beach this weekend and crack a nice cold beer in memory of Dick, one of the best!

Have a great Christmas and best wishes to all Jack Bruce fans around the globe.

Phil.

Cream reunited once before in January 1993 when they performed three songs at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame www.whereseric.com

I saw you play at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, PA on 4-19-1968. Aawesome show. In fact, it remains the best concert I ever saw. I would love to see a reunion. Thanks for the memories. Charley

Jack

Have a great Christmas and most importantly a healthy new year. Then a few Cream gigs wouldn't go wrong ..... although how we're all going to get the few tickets available is another thing. Looks like it's on the streets again for me. That'll pay off at least the card booking fee! And 'thank you' for More Jack Than God - it is wonderful. Best wishes. Rob

Deepest regrets on the loss of your friend, Dick Heckstall-Smith. I remember first hearing him on "Songs For A Tailor" and having to defend his playing to the college jazz-band members I hung out with at school (this was pre-Bitches Brew, so college jazzers were very closed off to anything outside their big-band-bebop-Miles universe).I've always found his music to be challenging, but emotionally and intellectually rewarding and it was worth following his career up to the end. Incidentally, I just finished reading "Blowing The Blues" a couple of days ago and I'm impressed with his deep committment to his musical vision and I'm glad he got to tell his life story. Sorry again. P.S. I eventually won most of those college debates.

Once in a while, a definitive song comes along. Some examples: Purple Haze, We don't get fooled again, Wanted Dead or Alive, and many more. These songs are the ones you LOVE the first time you hear them, and from then on. I was in High School when I first heard White Room. It took over 30 yrs for me to even start to grow a bit tired of it. Even though I don't play it as often, It still sends shivers down my spine. So perfectly written. Jack, Thanks so much for all the music. Live Cream Vol II is still one of my most prized possessions. My kids knew who Cream was before they started school. Best Regards, Dave Pickel PS-Please take the re-united Cream to the New York area :)

Jack:

How about LAZARUS RISING as the album name?

Thanks for taking my suggestion, that evening at Don Quixote's in Denver, for creating an acoustic version of "As You Said" with your son, Malcolm.

Coming in on the 4th beat for the Sunshine guitar solo, Cole Porter's Refrain from "Night & Day" in Octaves may work (starting with E5 on the 9th position to G5 on the 12th; fretting and opening the 3rd string during chording also seems to work here). Playing Sunshine in E, I think the refrain ends in G Major. After a 3 beat tacet interval to finish the bar, I play a unison bend on C# , then B C# G A for the main sunshine riff, which again becomes the subdominant in E, leading back to tonic.

Additional words for Strange Brew:

"On a Rainbow Malestrom in an Ancient Sea

We will take our Stand for Eternity..Because.....

You Know All Else is Lost"

Strange Brew..... A Panorama of Life Inside You"

(2nd verse)

"Near a House at the end of 47th Street

We will turn Ourselves back to The Broadway Beat......Because.....

Know Mr. Jimi'...s Boss

Strange Brew......A Panorama of Life Inside You"

I know this will come off - You are all wiser for the years.

Thanks,

Brian Miller
