I'm a mid forty guy and a Jack Bruce fan forever. I live in New England and just bought a business from a similarly aged guy in Pensacola, Florida. Our tastes in music are similar and we were delighted to find out that Jack Bruce was a mutual favorite. And more amazing still, while everyone harps on Cream ,we both like Songs for a Tailor and Harmony Row best of all.

When will we see Jack in the US in 2003???

Jack, Saw you twice at Coach House (San Juan Capistrano) with Ginger and Blues Saraceno. Anybody who hasn't seen Mr. Bruce...Dude can play. When I heard "Born Under A Bad Sign"...well God could have taken me right there and then. You are my mentor for bass players. Been playing awhile now. You have forgotten more than I will ever know. But it sure feels good with that sound rumbling up your backbone. Hope to see you again soon in California. Stevie J

I was just listening to "Smiles & Grins" from "Live At The Old Grey Whistle Test", and I began reminiscing about Jack's show my brother and heard at The Palace in Hollywood right before Christmas 1989. Having been a JB fan from before the Cream days, the show was quite a treat, especially when Ginger Baker performed "Toad". My brother and looked at each other and both said in unison,"...it doesn't get any better than this." And being two old farts, we didn't have to smoke anything before the show to reach that conclusion. All the best and Happy 2003.

Dear Mr. Bruce and all the readers Back in 67-69 Cream was popular in Thailand the band used to try to copy the music note for note. They probably don't understand that the blue rock jam type of music are meant to play as the way you feel. Stangely enough we still rock out jamming with the greatest hit such as croosroad, whiteroom, sunshine, stange brew.I never did get to see Cream but did see Mr. Clapton. If Mr. Bruce is ever want to visit Thailand for some rest and relaxation please contact me for any assistance and maybe we can sneek in a jam seesion by the beach somewhere. Cheers Metha Mojdara a Thai cross roader

I didn't realize until just now that so many other people knew about Jack Bruce like this. Feels good. There are so many possible things to say. I just will say this one for now and if someone wants to e-mail me to commiserate please feel free. There were parts in Spoonful that I think raised my spirit and it stayed up. From 67' til today still up.

Been entertained by Jack since I was in my teens. Used to go to sleep listening to the live version of Spoonful off Wheels of Fire. I occasionally have dreams where Spoonful is so clear it is unreal. Only heard Jack live once and that was with West Bruce and Laing in Denver, Colorado. The bass solo sound like a lead guitar at times. Amazing. One question - why is Harmony Row out of print? An absolutely wonderful album which should be made available again.

Hey Larry ! If you're still out there, give a an e-mail. I got a message on my voice mail from you back In Dec 2000, after I had just won tickets to see Jack in Bournemouth ( the show was later cancelled ) . I was the guy you hitched a ride with to see Jack & GB @ The Chance in Poughkeepsie back in 1989. Please give me a ring @ 718-961-0305 or e-mail me . Did you get to see Jck @ BB's in Dec 2001. I was so blown away I actually called in sick the next day, as I couldn't get to sleep for hours after the show. Jack plays those tunes like he wrote them 10 minutes ago, they sound so fresh .Clearly the most passionate musician around. Like Kip Hanrahan once said ...." you can't talk about Jack Bruce, you have to sort of talk around him . Listening to him is like having 6 or 7 shots of the best cognac you've ever had". I couldn't agree more.

When will i have the chance to see you again - i'll present you to my young son of 12 years old. In the 60' there was another bass player named Jack. Jack Cassidy of Jefferson airplane. My friend loved him. I was fan of you. What good discussions we had. i'm not a musician but my ears they are. your voice, your bass sound, your music and a good wine...sometimes life is really beautiful. Clearly the best bassist to ever walk this earth, and one of the best vocalists too! Cherished memories include seeing Jack at Bottom Line in 89' or thereabouts and being entertained, schooled, and enlightened like I never have been before and if that wasn't enough here comes encore time as Jack introduces an "old friend" and the curtains part when emerges a figure in a tweed jacket who turns out to be ERIC CLAPTON! Needless to say the place erupted into a frenzy that I was positive would bring the house crumbling down to the ground. People everywhere in the house were high-fivin' and yes, hugging each other as we all knew that we were witnessing history. After that show I truly floated across Manhattan and right over the Hudson River back to NJ never to be the same again. Also, at The Ritz in NYC circa 90'Jack was slated to play with drummer Mike Shrieve the lunatic from Santana (Woodstock years) Shrieve could not attend by it did not matter. I was grooving so hard to the show and worked my way all the way to the Ritz's general admission floor so that I was literally beneath Jack's feet. To show his appreciation for my enthusiasm Jack threw his harmonica right to me where it bounced off my chest, hit the floor and was quickly picked up by someone else. Not at all being detered I began grooving even harder knowing Jack intended for me to get that harmonica. A few numbers later Jack actually bent over toward me and gently lobbed me yet another harp which you KNOW I did NOT drop this time. The cherished German made Hohner in the key of C is still one of my prized possesions and I will never forget the exchange between Jack Bruce and me.

Thanks Jack, you have made my life a much richer place. You are the Bach of our generation and it's too bad that people won't realize it until it is too late. Reading this guestbook gives me a great feeling that I am not alone in my appreciation.Saw you with Cream in Vancouver and with West Bruce and Laing in San Diego. Love Shadows and when I want to be musically transported I listen to your music. Harmony Row and Songs for a Tailor are incredible and as much as I love Cream I think that West Bruce and Laing are the ultimate power trio. Proud to be alive during your time.

Wonderfull Website @bout one of my Favorite Bass Players. The Deep profound sounds of Cream are still in my Subconcious ,like all decent music. A reunion of CREAM would be AWESOME , Why not have a Reunion of BLUE CHEER as well!!!( An admitted Copy-cat Band from the 60,s ,but Technically Rougher!!) It is sort of tragic that CREAM &Jack Get overlooked as Prime Influences in Hard Rock /Heavy Metal, where would Sabbath be without The WALL OF SOUND that CREAM created????? Sorry if this sounds TOO Cream Oriented ,I have only one Jack Bruce Solo recording. The First time I ever heard of a Six -string BASS was on the Back of the FRESH CREAM LP as a 14-year old. Now Most people don,t even notice A Unusual BASS when a band Plays..

I did happen to See Jack @ Friends back in 1980 at SUNY New Pa;tz ,NY - was a very Jazzy show , Atmospheric Fusion Music..

Not to Disparage Jack, If I wanted to be a Over the TOP rock Bassist I would be a Combination of Bill Wyman , Paul McCartney , John Entwistle and JACK himself!!!!!!! COOL WEBSITE ,So Detailed , Take Care!!!!!!!

Speaking of local bands. If you can find Black Moon check them out.Kind of like Jack Bruce sits-in,on bass, with Stone Temple Pilots. Not a lot of subtlety; tons of emotion and power.Nice version of White Room with Tales of Brave Ulysses twist at the end.

I'm 50 now and at long last I got to see Jack live at Leeds (UK) some 5 years or so ago! I was a fan of his from day one when he played with Cream. He has been THE inspiration and model for my bass playing because quite simply, he was and is the BEST.

Jack,

I've been a fan for years - Back in '68, Wheels of Fire was the first double album I bought - for a 13 year old kid it was more than I could afford, but it was worth it. It made quite an impression on me and 18 years later it was one of the first 6 CDs I bought also.

Also loved the stuff with Tony Williams, Songs for a Tailor, West Bruce & Laing, etc. Then I lost touch with your music for a few years until about 2 years ago when someone played 'A Gathering of Minds' (Live from Montreux; mid '80's with Alan Holdsworth, Billy Cobham, David Sancious & Didier Lockwood) for me - since then I've been searching around and picking up what I could of your catalog.

Just got my copy of Shadows in the Air. I've got to say this is GREAT! An incredibly strong release. Great to hear you are still at it. Now I've got some catching up to do as I explore the rest of your catalog.

Obviously Cream is only one aspect of your long career, but it is an incredibly influential aspect. As a young teenager during Cream's tenure, it was probably second only to the Beatles in terms of expanding my own musical horizons. Plus Cream set a standard for musicianship in the Rock arena that few have been able to meet.

Eric's guest slot on the version of 'Sunshine of Your Love' from Shadows in the Air convinces me that you two still have the potential of creating fiery and important music together. I can only imagine what would happen if you collaborated on NEW material in addition to revisiting your old material. In other words, if I were to ask you about the possibility of a Cream 'reunion' I want you to understand that the request does not come from the standard nostalgiac reasons of wanting to hear you wail away on all the old hits, but from a genuine desire to create a conduit for the creation of powerful new music. And what was Cream, if not such a conduit?

So how about it, Jack? Any chance you & Eric & Ginger might give it a go? I can understand all kinds of arguments against it, not the least of which would be the zillions of people who would only want you to play the old stuff. But wouldn't the possibility of creating something new and magical make it worth the risk?

"I'll wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves..."

Whatever you decide, thanks for decades of amazing music!

-David Vella

I was a stage hand at Winterland and the old Fillmore when Cream recorded "Wheels of Fire" I had a broken wrist at the time and had a big plaster cast on my arm. Jack's bass amp went out one night and the 2 Cream roadies Micky & Peter weren't to be found. I switched heads with another acts Marshall heads and got Jack back in bussiness. With a broken wrist! I loved it, I have pictures of those nights, and a great one of Jack backstage with a big smile. He was very nice to me, an awestruck 18yr old kid.

Well this is to Jack

Here it is; March 15,2003 and I am still listening to Cream.

I was 15 and tried to learn bass. I figured it must be played the only way I knew and that was a la "Sittin on top of the world" off Goodbye. Scales, what scales, you played it like Jack Bruce or else.

I had an EB3 but I finally gave up, cause I couldn't play like Jack Bruce and turned to the guitar.

The trio of Cream were awesome and you produced music in a classical sense, as people are still listening to music made in the 60's because its great art.

PEter.

I've been reading up on the equipment Jack's used over the years and found out that one of the EB3 basses he used in Cream had a diode installed in it to make it sort of fuzzy without overdriving an amp.

Was wondering if anyone knew how this was done, what kind of diode, and where it was installed, etc.?

Thanks!

(I've just now found this website, I'm still learning to think in Internet.) There are a few things I've had in my head for years, but never written them down. In the 60s, we had a homemade stereo system that had separate amps for each channel, and one was better than the other, so I listened to Cream with a remarkably subdued guitar part. And, as was mentioned by someone else in the guestbook, that's when I learned to listen to music, listening in a darkened basement to the bass tracks on "Disreali Gears", "Wheels of Fire" and "Goodbye". I didn't get the chance to see/hear Jack live until the late 80s, when he played the El Mocambo with Anton Fier. I don't think I've ever been nervous before someone else's concert, except that one. Would it be a letdown, after so many years, such high expectations? No, it was one of the most moving, most musical, most ...... blissful, I guess evenings I've ever spent. I couldn't sleep for hours. The other point I want to make is that by investigating the music of people that Jack has collaborated with (I was going to give examples, but the list is too staggeringly long), I have been introduced to worlds that opened into worlds into worlds. Thank you for the journey and the nourishment.

Jack,

The time is now. I’m free. So ring up Eric, and let’s you, me, and him reform Cream and get out on the road. Sure, Ginger is irreplaceable, but with the three of you together, let’s face it -- he’d bail before you got as far as Milwaukee. Besides, Ginger was my very first drum influence so I know all his patterns. And Pete was one of my biggest influences as a lyricist, so I can take care of lyrics if we decide to record. Think about it, Jack. Cream together again. Falstaff would toss us a fortune in sponsorship. You can even pay me scale. And I’ll throw all my choices for the set list to your solo stuff. Imagine doing all of “Harmony Row” for 20,000 worshippers instead of putting them all to sleep with “Wonderful Tonight.” So let’s do it. You’d have a blast, and I need the groupies. And believe me, after twenty years of recording bluezak, Eric needs this more than both of us.

I eagerly await your reply, Randy

Hi, I do remember a very impressing Concert in Kiel/Germany in 1985 or '86 which I haven't found in the "history". The "theme" was "Indian experimental Music" - at least none of Jacks songs were played. Jack was mostly seen at the keyboards and occasional vocals whereas Mr. Nauseef (?) and Mr. ??? took over the percussion. This was really amazing and showed what a superb musician Jack Bruce is(and his partners on stage, too!).

Interesting "How's Tricks" is being re-released! I listened to the "old" CD this morning on the way to work and I say AGAIN:

IF, IF, IF Jack, Eric and Ginger did ONE more tour/release...can you posssibly imagine how INCREDIBLE the vocals would be?

Forget ( how could we! ) the bass and guitar playing! Jack's voice and Eric's together once more would reduce any and all other rock vocal efforts to sewage!

How long can we go on beating this dead(?) horse? We can only hope this comes to pass before we all leave the planet!

I'm writing on behalf of my musical mentor, jazz guitarist Bill DeArango, now in his eighties, retired in a nursing home. You may be familiar with his 1940s work with Sarah Vaughan (her first recording session), Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Paul Motian et al...Bill owned a music store/studio here in the late 1960s, was a big Cream fan; unlike many of his contemporaries, he's always kept abreast of current styles. One of our audience once told us that Anton Fier had come to listen although we didn't notice him. Anyway, Bill sends his regards. I have quite a few unreleased tapes of him, one from a 1973 concert with Tony Williams, glad to send some if you'd like...I read the interview where you said that Viet Nam veterans were still writing to thank you for keeping them alive with your music - that very much moved me. You really had quite an impact over here...Thanks for the musical moments...All the best, Jonathan

Jack: Just a quick note from a long-time musician who's only been heard in bars, dives, (anywhere we could play) in the Midwest US....though I am now the ripe old age of 52, your style of playing and singing has influenced me since I first started at 16. Try as I might, though, my tapes always come out sounding more like David Crosby!! Oh well, I guess it only goes to show...there's only one Jack Bruce! (By the way, the bathroom at Chuck Berry's isn't NEARLY as dangerous as his rehearsal room... ask Keith Richards).

Blues And Boogie Explosion

I first heard of this title when doing one of my frequent "Jack Bruce" searches on Ebay about 8 weeks ago. While I don't claim to be an expert, I consider myself pretty familiar with Jack's body of work. At first, I assumed that it might be one of those labeling errors from "All Music Guide" (Cooleyhighharmony anyone?)so I decided to do as much research as I could. Well, nothing turned up except that I was able to determine from a scan of the CD cover that Jack was indeed listed as a player and the other musicians were, for the most part, participants in the Rocket 88 project. So purely in the interest of research (hehe) I tried to win the auction. At the last minute I was "sniped" but further research enabled me to track down a copy from a German seller. Words fail me. How did this gem remain unmentioned in any Jack discography or any discussion of Jack's body of work? Here are 16 killer tunes (9 songs and 7 alternate versions) that rank among the best of Jack's blues performances. According to the liner notes, this was a project put together by pianist Bob Hall in 1990 and recorded "direct-to-disc" in Ludwigsburg, Germany (yes, it's a DDD cd!) but not released until 1998. It still doesn't explain why I've not only never heard of it, nor have I ever heard it alluded to anywhere. Anyway it's on the Jeton label and it's Jet 60 007. The players are Bob Hall, George Green, and Ian Stewart- piano; Danny Adler- guitar, vocals; Hal Singer- tenor sax; Willie Garret- alto sax; Charley Antolini- drums; and of course Jack Bruce on rollicking, boogying, balls-out bass. He has an extended bass solo and co-wrote "Rainmaker". The cuts are- 1. K.C. Jump 2. I Need You (alternate) 3. All Night Long 4. Night Train 5. Chicken Shack Boogie 6. Back In The Chicken Shack 7. The Fish (alternate) 8. The Rainmaker 9. Old Bill 10. K.C. Jump (altenate) 11. I Need You 12. Chicken Shack Boogie (alternate) 13. Back In The Chicken Shack (neither take is labeled "alternate") 14. The Fish 15. The Rainmaker (alternate) 16. Old Bill (alternate)

Let the hunt begin!

Hi Jack,

I just got the first 4 reissues and I love them--can't wait for the next batch.

Is there any chance that "I Always Wanted to Do This" and "Automatic" will be re-released in the same series later?

just bought the cream bbc sessions cd.so good to hear the live sound that you conjure up.we go back a long way jack.i first saw you play with graham bond at the fender club, kenton, near harrow.(1964 or so?).that was it! you guys just blew us away and we never missed seeing you.my mates and i reckoned that you should have added a hot guitar player to the band(we all thought a lot of mr clapton).we got our wish minus graham bond.i remember clearly a gig at the starlight ballroom (this was not really a muso`s venue but a dance hall) we arrived late and expected to get a poor view of the stage.not so!there were only 2 rows of seats, right in front of the stage all empty.an amazing gig, and bearing in mind that the stage was only 1 ft high, we were eyeball to eyeball. during this period me and my mates had a band going, with me trying to be you jack.our guitar player through this period was a certain alan parsons, who at the time was working in emi`s factory.we were called the earth and used to do many of your songs.i bet alan never mentioned it? i met you finally in 2002 at canterbury fayre, when you were trying to eat your kebab. thanks for all of it jack

For any Australian readers, particularly those in Sydney, Red Eye Records have the new re-issues in stock @ circa $36.00. They had 'How's Tricks' and 'Things We Like' in stock the other day. Unfortunately I was pressed for time and didn't find out if the others were/will be in. But it's a start! Red Eye also has a web site and does mail order I believe, so if you're in the bush it might save you getting them in from USA or The Old Dart. Also, I would suppose the excellent MOJO store around the corner would have them or get them for you asap. Those guys are great and they know their stuff.

Jack Great to see "Jet Set Jewel" coming out at last. As a fan of yourself and Simon Phillips - and from hearing 3 of the tracks on "Willpower" - it's become somewhat of a Holy Grail! Are you heading "Down Under" at all in the future? Sadly missed the Allstars gig 2 years ago due to family commitments. All the best with everything. Cheers Andy Crook

-I just purchased the remastered Songs For A Tailor. I t still sounds as fresh and innovative as it did in 1969 when I first purchased the record. I became a bass player because of the influence of Jack Bruce. The current generation does not have pioneers and trailblazers such as Jack Bruce. Thank you Jack.

Jack: You are the best and most-prolific,and innovative, imaginative electric bassist that has ever lived, even up there with James Jamerson and people like Jaco,Jonas Hellborg,Entwistle,Greg Arama, and others that have moved-on to the outer-worlds...You can never play too-much! I loved the Track: "Timeslip" on "Out Of The Storm" LP,I loved that Jam,it is great... I would love to see you playing again with Steve Hunter and also maybe together with Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter both together on Lead-Guitars... I was there at the shows in '89 with Ginger Baker and Blues Scarceno and I was impressed with everything at those shows, and had thought that both yourself and Ginger had gotten alot better and had matured immensely as players, the only missing-link was the guitarist,as he was playing in his own world and not together as a unit with you and Ginger... I had visions of people that we always loved like Adrian Gurvitz,Terje Rypdal(Norwegian Hendrixian-Influenced Icy-Space God/Composer/Virtuosso Extrordinaire,or someone like the two-formentioned players playing with you and jamming endlessly in a rhythmic-frenzy as on the forementioned track: "Timeslip" which is the only track that I always miss when ever I have seen you play lately...Also the track "One" is great from that lp and you have done that live...Also I miss the times when you had played with West,Bruce & Laing, and I sincerely think that Leslie West really needs you in the band: Mountain again,to replace the brilliant bassist and musical-genius:the Late Great Felix Pappalardi... When I have seen you in the last 15 or so years here in S.F. and also in L.A. and Berkeley, after the gig,I stand there and say to myself: "Magically Delicious",The music is that great and when people say Bruce,I don't think of the manish-lad from Asbury Park,I think of J.B. and the brilliance and supreme-magic in that music over any other BRUCE! You're the absolute best Jack and you should be into your music like you are as you are up there with Jimi and all of the best that have played music in this world...The Very Best and Most-Majestic AND BRILLIANT,Tony Williams was right also when he said that he loved your bass-playing,it's REALLY GREAT! Would you ever consider jamming with some of the musicians here in the Bay-Area here in S.F.look me up and I will put you in touch with Greg Errico(Sly & The Family Stone/Weather Report drummer/Producer) and Carlos Santana and Gary Duncan(Quicksilver M.S.) and players like that.Would like to see you doing some of the stuff that you did with Kip Hanrahan with some Bay Area Local Musicians...Like the forementioned on Tracks like : "God Is Great" or Others...Out Into The Fields"..."Harmony Row" is still one of my most-all-time favorite albums ever... And it is a masterwork to my ears...Timeless... Wonderful and Sounds fresh with every listening.. I love the syncopation of your bass-playing on: "Time Slip"...I would love to jam with you anytime as I am a drummer and love that style of playing more than any other rock-style that I have heard ever in Rock Music...It still holds up and does'nt sound that dated...Cream-music lives forever! Keep-up the good work J.B.I'm gonna fight for you J.B. The ONLY BRUCE!

It still is just a stunning set of songs. I don't know why these CD's aren't million sellers; but I get it my friend; I've been there for years, and hope to be there for many more. Thanks again. And again.

I am thrilled that Jack's great albums are available again after so much time. I saw Jack, with Cream, in early 1967 at a youth centre one Friday night in Basildon. I was only fifteen years old, and it was one of the most fantastic gigs that I have ever attended. I was also present at the first of the two farewell concerts at the Albert Hall. It was great, after all these years, to have a chance to talk to Jack after a concert at the Cliffs Pavillion, Southend during November 2002. He had been doing a few of the old Cream favourites, which was well worth it after sitting through a load of heavy metal from the other performers. When I said I liked his album 'Shadows In The Air' he shook my hand and said 'Thanks mate,' after signing my ticket. I got Jack and Eric Clapton's autographs from all those years back in 1967. It was great meeting you at last Jack - God bless you for sticking to your musical principles over the years. Happy Birthday on the 14th - I hope you have a great celebration. All the very, very best to you - Bob Cross (I would love to play guitar with you).

Look,

For years I have been "singing" the praises of the legend, the greatest electric bassist and perhaps all around musician in contempary history!! Jack Bruce! His talent and ability are beyond belief. No exaggeration as you all know! The last thing I need to see before we all end up in wheel chairs.........is a Cream reunion!!! This would be the ultimate "cream on the cake" for untold millions of fans. What else left is there out there?? Oh yeah......... a Kiss or Fleetwood Mac reunion??? Truly laughable. C'mon 'slowhand' Clapton, I understand YOU are the lone hold-out here!! NEVER have you played as fine as you did when you were with with Jack and Ginger!!! Never!!! You OWE it to your fans (many that are Cream fans in the first place anyway) Get with the program Mr. Clapton!!! and give the fans what they deserve and want!!!! CREAM!!!! LAY IT ON US!!!! PS LET US NOT FORGET TO DISCUSS ANOTHER LEGEND.............Ginger Baker. One of the worlds (if not the best) drummer. He is responsible for so many todays greats in getting them started, like Bill Buford, the late John Bonham, Stuart Copeland to name a few!! Ginger Baker is like fine wine, getting better (if thats possible) with each passing year!! Incredibly talented and phenomenal!!

How fantastic to finally have a CD copy of "Harmony Row", and what a great job Universal have done on all the repackaged reissues. In fact all the discs are excellent and the long-awaited "Jet Set Jewel" was certainly well worth the wait. A very 1970's cover to boot...(is it the original planned sleeve? and why isn't is a Jack Bruce BAND release?)

There are some real undiscovered gems amongst this lot - the original version of "Without A Word" being a particular fave (the only studio track from this particular line-up); a really unusual version of "Sunshine" on the "Live '75" disc which is a great performance overall; and the oddly titled extra instrumental on "Things We Like"; and of course so much more...

If you haven't got them yet - what are you waiting for? Does anyone know anything about the compilation album which I haven't seen yet (I think it is called "Rope ladder...")?

All that is required now is for the Beeb to release the 1977 Jack Bruce Band "In Concert" performance which from memory was the BBC's first quadrophonic live broadcast - and - the studio sessions Jack did also at the Beeb in the early 70s. And what about a live Lifetime album?..........

But until then there is much to rediscover and enjoy. It's been a long wait to see this stuff finally given the appropriate just treatment, but has been well worth the wait.

Oh, yeah - and why has "Pieces of Mind" suddenly become "Peaces of Mind".........?

Hi Jack, best wishes to your 60th birthday.

There is much to say in order to appreciate your work. Already in the late 60s you gave the bass a new dimension by your revolutionary style of bass-playing. Many of the songs you wrote are wonderful. Your voice is unique.

I have learnt quite a lot from your music - thank you very much. All the best.

Hey yeah! Hey yeah! (I can't sound as marvelous as you singing this expression!). Anyway, I wanted to wish you a Happy 60th Birthday today. You've really survived the rock n roll wars unlike some of your more unfortunate colleagues. I was wondering, did you ever have the opportunity to play with legendary Bay area guitarist John Cipollina (speaking of unfortunate colleagues). As much as I love Eric, I think Cipollina had a more distinctive sound. I know you played with his Quicksilver mate Nicky Hopkins (the best pianist bar none) when you recorded the song "You've Got To Have The Blues" when you recorded in the Bay area. Anyway, you've provided me with many, many memorable hours of listening and please keep those wonderful vocal pipes and fantastic bass lines going for many more years. You're the best! Happy 60th!

Jack--

Happy 60th birthday. You've influenced more musicians, more bassists, than you will ever know, and your influence--both direct and indirect--upon music will reverberate years and years after we're all gone. A million thanks!

Please can someone tell me who the guitarist was on Jack's appearance on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1981? I saw them playing White Room and the guitarist was playing a red Gibson 335.

Dear Jack I want above all to say .. "thank you"! You inspired me in 1967 to pick up a bass and play like you. Thirty six years later I'm still playing my Gibson EB-3 in the only bass style there is, the Jack Bruce style of 'lead bass'. Many years ago I recieved the greatest compliment. After a set some one approached me and said "the way you play reminds me of Jack Bruce, ever hear of him?" By the way, the best concert I have ever attended was at Radio City Music Hall in my home town of N.Y.C. in 1972. I saw two legends on the same stage. West,Bruce & Lang! Thanks Jack, your the best.

Jack Bruce has always suprised and amazed me with his links to so many names in the music biz. I take every opportunity to catch his live sets,as a side man or when his band is appearing somewhere in New York. I loved the "Abbey Road" tribute and it really moved me to hear Jack do Beatle songs.I especially enjoyed the "Cream of Jack Bruce" at B.B. Kings Club and I attended both nights! I can't get enough of this musical genius and SUPERSTAR. Keep on playin' and singing JB. I never tire of your music and I am listening to "Shadows In The Air" as I write. Love,Peace, and Happiness.. It's difficult to enter a message on a site where it might be seen by the best there is at what he does. I've got the same story to tell that everbody else does. Been a fan since 1970, started playing bass as a teenager after hearing Jack, named my daughter Victoria Sage, you know, we all know. I guess I've seen Jack about a dozen times now. I've seen some really outstanding shows. I remember one really bad show (no fault of Jack's). It was in a little club here in Cleveland that had a capacity of about 400 and there were probably close to twice that squeazed in. My wife and I were squashed up against the stage right in font of Jack. We were standing on a sea of empty beer bottles. People were setting empty beer bottles all over the front of the stage, even in front of Jack's vocal mic stand. As expected Jack's playing was great, but the sound was horrible, non-stop feedback! Jack kept telling the engineers to get the monitors together but it progressively got worse. After resigning to the fact that these incompetant technicians were trashing his show he sort of, well, BUMPED his keyboard off it's stand and CLEARED the stage of all the empty beer bottles in his way.

I also remember the great show in the mid 80's at Carnegie Hall with Kip Hanrahan. My wife and I met Jack after the show and had a few drinks with him at the bar. He gave us big bear hugs. I love Jack. He's the real deal. He's forceful and aggressive, yet sensitive and thoughtful. I really believe his music says a lot about his personality, there's a lot going on here.

What is happening to music these days? Why can't young performers learn from the integrity of musicians like Jack? I'm the house sound engineer in one of Cleveland's largest concert clubs. I hear the worst music I've ever heard in my life on a nightly basis. I don't understand why vocalists in hard core metal bands need monitors, are they afraid they might emit a cookie monster growl out of key?

I'm not a very good bass player, but I'm an excellent sound man. Promoters call me THE MONSTER. I've been studying every nuance of jack's voice for over 30 years. I know exactly what frequencies define the characteristics of his bass sound. I hate hate feedback, and I know how to get rid of it instantly. Jack, if you see this, please, please take me away from this shithole. I won't let you down.

Happy birthday Jack!

JACK, HAVE BEEN A FAN OF YEARS SINCE 1966 WHEN I FIRST HEARD CREAM, AND I HAVE FOLLOWED YOUR SOLO CAREER FROM THE BEGINNING. I TURNED 50 THIS YEAR, AND I HAVE LISTENED TO A LOT OF MUSIC, BUT I WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW I THINK YOU'RE THE BEST BASS PLAYER I HAVE HEARD, AND I ENJOY YOUR WORK ON HARMONICA. I HAVE PLAYED HARMONICA MYSELF SINCE I WAS 16, AND I PLAYED IN A BAND FOR A FEW YEARS. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS TO PLAY AND SING IS SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD, I DEVELOPED A GOOD HARP LINE FOR THAT TUNE. ALSO REALLY DIG TRAINTIME, THE PERFORMANCE AT FILLMORE YOU GAVE WAS AND STILL IS A CLASSIC!!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT TUNES, HOPE YOU COME TO CHICAGO AGAIN SOMETIME, SAW YOU AT PARK WEST WHEN YOU WERE TOURING WITH "I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THIS" BACK IN 1981. LOVE THE TUNE DANCING ON AIR. MY FAVORITE SOLO SONG OF YOURS THOUGH STILL REMAINS ROPE LADDER, AND THEME FOR IMAGINERY WESTERN A CLOSE SECOND. WELL, TAKE CARE, JACK, DROP ME A LINE SOMETIME,

YOURS TRULY,

Jack Bruce is the reason I am a bass player, as opposed to being the worst of three guitarists in a band who was handed the bass, if you know what I mean...

When I got out of the US Navy in 1981, I joined a band with a few new acquaintances and volunteered to play bass, somewhat regretfully. A friend of mine said not to despair, that playing bass could be cool, and turned me on to what Jack did on "Crossroads." I have not looked back.

Happy 60th and many, many more to follow Jack, you are the very best,most-innovative,electric bass-player in the world...There is no better...Loved your playing with Ringo's All-Star band when you played Berkeley Community Theatre a few years back. Would love to see this stuff released finally on LP and CD,from the entire tour...Loved your playing on Frank Zappa's "Apostrophe" Title Track, the magical interplay beween yourself and FZ...Also "Time Slip" Is not to be believed...Would like to hear you do: "God Is Great" from "Exotica" live...You skipped the S.F. Bay Area the last time that you had played here in California...please e-mail me if you would like to do a West Coast Kip Hanrahan record...With Greg Errico("Hand-Feet")Ex-Sly & The Family Stone Funk-Agent on Drums and Production with Kip...Jonas Hellborg, yourself,Terje Rypdal,Carlos Santana and many others like Steve Swallow would be a perfect line-up...So....What do you Think? Great! Good to find a website dedicated to the greatest bassist since Bach, which would be enough for most but the best voice in rock'n'roll to boot. Couple of dates that weren't in the file:- June 9th 1967, Civic Hall Wolverhampton. Only about 100 of us there for the best band around. Superb gig all the same. June 19th (or thereabouts)Carlton Club, Eardington Birmingham. The Carlton became famous as Mothers in later years. In 1967 the management were so hip they thought that a trio of spotty 16 year olds were Cream. We were chucked out and told that the club didn't open for another two hours. Mooching round we saw Jack leaning on the roof of Ginger's Interceptor chatting to Ginger and Eric sitting inside. Amazing gig standing six feet in front of Ginger's enormous drumkit and all that amplification(?)Well it was big stuff in 1967. Love the site. All power to you.

Jack, It's been a long time since I tapped the keys on the old DELL...probably because the ill fated tour of OZ was cancelled and like many Aussie devotees, was disappointed that you could not get down here. Good to see you are keeping the fans up to date on your diary page...George fell of the perch 18 months ago...obviously busy times for a busy man. Maybe your management could drop a few entries into the diary, you know, just to keep the paying public up to date with your latest adventures, if you are having any that is. Keep up the good work Jack. By the way, the DVD is pretty fucking good. Enjoy the northern summer. Phil.

My very first fan mail. It's nice to have a chance to say thanks to Jack. I bought my first bass after hearing Disraeli Gears and still gig three times a week after all these years. As I grew older, Jacks influence opened my ears to the styles of music that have been a sountrack to my life, and Pete Browns lyrics still remain some of the most evocative ever written.I suppose his mainly influence on me was to inspire me to innovate, not immitate, so for that, thanks Jack.

PETE BROWN AND YOURSELF HAMMERED OUT SOME GREAT LYRICS. ALSO JUST GOT A CD OF BEST OF CREAM REMASTERED, IN FACT I'M LISTENING TO DESERTED CITIES OF THE HEART AS I TYPE THIS, A GREAT TUNE. LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT VISIT TO CHICAGO, LAST TIME I SAW YOU WAS IN 1980 AT PARK WEST. KEEP DANCIN' ON AIR, JACK,

I went to three gigs from San Juan Capistrano,to The Palace in Hollywood,to Ventura Theatre in my then 1968 Gold Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and enjoyed everything except Blues guitar-playing as it seemed to be out of sync with any form of actual bonding unison with the other 2 thirds of the band..It did'nt envelope the actual sound in a way that you had been blanketed with Clapton's playing or even Mick Taylor's...So Even though the other 2 3rd's of the band was brilliant and completely incredible and innovative and progressive...The guitar playing seemed to be a series of flashy Guitar-Proto-Type,Hammer-On's and influenced by people like Eddie Van Halen and others that mastered that type of technique,it lacked in soul and depth to me as it had very little bottom and was very one-dimensional as it was very sloppy playing...I would much rather hear an incredible player like Ulrich Roth from The Scorpions, circa 1973-1978 play with you and Ginger,or Allan Holdsworth...I have also thought about the possibilities of others like Neal Schon or Gary Duncan the indian Cat from Quicksilver Messenger Service playing with the band with yourself and Ginger or in the context of the Kip Hanrahan group that did the ever-wonderful "Exotica" and many others...I have spoken to Allan about it as I was partially responsible for Allan getting through to Enigma when he was selling his I.O.U. 1st LP on his then own label through his manager and Allan would like the idea of a band with yourself and Ginger Baker as he was much more of a fan of Eric Clapton then Jimi Hendrix, sadly enough, although that was always Allan's style...But of course quite righteously, then you could always get Uli and Allan together to be a 2000 21st Century version of Cream, crossed with Twin-Guitar Harmonies of Wishbone Ash and The Allman Brothers! This would be truly great Jack! Anyway,I have a really great label owned by a local cat here in the Bay Area: Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records, whom would love to record yourself with Allan or Leslie West or Ulrich Roth and Michael Schenker...Also A Truly GREAT Name for another West Coast Version of The Next Kip Hanrahan CD Release would be "Phenomena",you could get old Eric Clapton & The Powerhouse band-mate: Stevie Winwood to replace the late Don Pullen on Organ and Keyboards.. There are loads of local Bay Area musicians like Gary Duncan(Part/Half Scottish!) and others like Carlos Santana,Greg "Hand-Feet" Errico and many, many others around here that would gladly pay homage to your royal greatness and genius/brilliance...You are the very best musician in The Cream and the real-world needs to know it and just how truly great you are...Contact Mike Varney at Shrapnel Records in Novato,CA (415) Area Code,if you are interested in doing a project like this with Allan and Uli,Michael Schenker,Neal Schon,Duncan,Santana or whatever comes to your mind Jack..."Phenomena" Lives as does Jack Bruce's great majestically God-given,magical music lives on eternally and forevermore...In Our Hearts and Minds..THANK YOU JACK FOR 38 TRULY WONDERFUL YEARS OF GREATNESS AND BRILLIANCE...YOU ARE THE BEST IN THE WEST JACK!

Jack, you are one of my all time fav musicians.I have made a point to see you live whenever you have been in the ny area. Your song writing, playing and that voice, unparalled. Why more bassists don't cite you as an influence is beyond me. I have been a drummer for 30+ yrs and regret not to have been fortunate enough to play with you. All the best Walter

Theme From Imaginary Western... what a great song. I really like the way Mountian did it at Woodstock. That guitar solo is one of the best ever. (Thanks for writing that Jack!)

Speaking of solo's... (how's that for a segway) my favorite rock song EVER recorded is the Cream version of Crossroads. The bass playing by Jack (it just kicks ass!) and the guitar solo's by Eric are just the best jam that was ever recorded. I never get tired of hearing it!

I have heard that Eric said it wasn't that good, that he was actually playing some of it wrong or something... but what the hell, there is nothing to knock about that recording at all. I have not heard a better live rock song since it was recorded 35 years ago. NOT ONE!!

I just read the book about Cream and in it, it mentions about the Cream performance at the R&R Hall of Fame induction (in 1993). Damn, I missed that entirely. I went to Amazon to see if it was recorded or taped and I see no release for it. Do you mean to tell me that that performance wasn't recorded (CD) or filmed (DVD) and relased?!

I have to see them doing Crossroads, White Room & SUnshine Of Your Love again. The version of Crossroads on the version on the "farewell tour tape (Albert Hall performance?)is passable but the overall video taping and editing of the video sucked. Does anyone know where I can buy the R&R Hall of Fame sound check or actual performance?

Have you seen the new Led Zep DVD? It is very good. That movie that was released years ago (The Song Remains the Same) just sucks in comparison. Who has some good tape of Cream so we can see something compatible fronm them. After all they are the band that got it all started!

Thanks for the info.

Hi,

Nice to see the solo albums available again!

I'm trying to put together a story on composer and pianist Mike Taylor who Jack played with and who wrote some stuff for Cream, is there any way for Jack to answer questions ? I'm contacting John Hiseman and maybe Dick Heckstall-Smith as well.

Cheers, Ian Green

Those who are interested may want to check out www.cloudsandclocks.net, an Italian music and culture free-ezine. It has a good overview of Jack Bruce's career and a review of the newly released live 2fer, plus a lot of other interesting stuff e.g. interviews with Hugh Hopper and the like. Nothing you don't know, but well written and good to see a European view.

Jack / Derek,

I've just got hold of a copy of the "The Canterbury Fayre" DVD which is great - a truly atmospheric gig which has considerable intimacy to it, especially the way it has been filmed. It reminds me that I remember seeing somebody officially videoing a gig I attended at 'The Grand' in Clapham, London in 1993 (band with Gary Husband and Blues Saraceno). Is there any intention to release this ever?....it was a brilliant gig - I was in the front row with some mates. I think we would even be on the film!!!

Also I have been listening a lot to the newly re-released solo albums especially "How's Tricks" and "Jet Set Jewel". What a great band that was and two amazingly complete and cohesive records they are. Curiously I have also been listening a lot to Jeff Beck's "Who Else?" album - the connection? One Tony Hymas of course. Has Jack ever recorded with Jeff Beck? The two master musicians move in such similar circles and have obvious overlaps in musical territory, besides the more obvious links via Hymas and Cozy Powell solo albums.

What a combination that would be Jack Bruce and Jeff Beck - both hailing from the early 60s London blues scene - their paths must have crossed many times over the years but no real collaboration ever? If Jack ever takes time away from the marvellous Chicoland Express.....well.....how about a venture with Jeff Beck? Perhaps with Bill Bruford or Ginger on drums and Carla Bley on keys...all the B's (or atleast four of them = "B4" or "Before").

Whatever, I think the Jeff Beck gig would be great.

In the meantime I eagerly await the new album. I'm still busy with the JB solo album remasters and also the Zep stuff recently released.....

Regards

Howard Johnston

Jack - I know what you need in a guitarist and I have the goods to fit that bill. I am a huge fan of the live Cream stuff (like Sweet Wine, Sleepy Time Time etc..) especially when the band is phasing in and out of time. If you and Ginger wanted to try it one more time and take a 3-piece Jam on the road I'll do it. My credentials? Well, there's a song circulating on the internet called "Traffic Jam" that is supposed to be a rare cut from Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray vaughan - we'll its me! How about this - here's a live version of it from 1995 as a 4-piece (basss, drums, gtr, sax) recorded from a boombox in a bar that I played - it sounds remarkably like the Klooks Kleek stuff you guys did in the 60's. This has not circluated. Check it out here: <a href="/http://home.twcny.rr.com/rwalikis/trafficjam.mp3"> Traffic Jam LIVE 1994</a> Jack, I close my eyes and play the guitar. I can sing very well too and I write and collaborate. I'm serious - I can't do it without solid players and you and Ginger are the absolute best. You'll need a player like me (forget Gary Moore - he just doesn't get it) and I promise we can make it better than what you did with Clapton.

regarding the 1st live cream release; anyone that knew better and realized what a bad mixing job it was, was prompted to adjust the levels to bring out the most amazing bass playing and improvisational thought coming from jack. just the bass and drums would have sufficed alone.

Hi Jack, As a fellow Bassist who started my musical trip in 1967,I just want to say that of all the fine bass players around,You and Larry Taylor, have always been my favourites. I went from Violin to Bass Guitar, and completely by-passed regular guitar, therefore I think and play as a bassist should, and not try to be a lead guitarist on bass! To this day , two of my favourite pieces of live recordings, are Crossroads and Spoonful "live" on Cream's Wheels Of Fire set.

I fully appreciate the sensitivity and original approach you employ in your Songwriting, Vocals and bass playing. Your solo albums are very enjoyable as well as BBM cd.

All the best ! Hope we can catch up sometime. If you'd care to sign my guestbook it would be my honour! at; www.geocities.com/henry_correy/

Greetings From Australia

It's been great to hear jet-set jewel. Live in '75 is fun too. I've been waiting a long time to really hear that band. Who knows the dirt? Why did they break-up? Mick Taylor left the Stones to do this band. Did they all hate eachother? Also will anyone out their send me a tape or something of Automatic? I've never been able to hear it. I also would appreciate if anyone has figured out the chords to Can you follow or other Jack Bruce Songs. I have to much of a tin ear to really hear the changes.

Hi, Mr. Jack, I have just listened to the first four remastered solo-works (en suite) which I bought in Cologne this afternoon. Whoever's idea it was to remaster these recordings - it was the best idea he ever had in his life (except it was the composer and musician himself). The CD's are of excellent acoustic quality and - what makes me very happy - all the artwork also seems to be done with a great deal of love to the music. So thanks again for that music which i am listening to since it first came out. It was the radio then. So - kind regards from Germany to England. H2M

Read about the ITV "Has Been" show with Ginger and felt very bad about it.

First, no matter what, he's no "has been", a dormant volcano perhaps but never extinct.

Second, sorry about his INS/IRS problems, which the UK seems to be bandwagoning as to re. his residence in S. Africa.

Third, hope he's not feeling too poorly what with the limp and cane.

Lastly, the bitterness over the past. Kind of makes me feel ashamed to have on occasion urged on a reunion of 3 very disparate elements.

More than anything, I wish Ginger all peace and happiness. Wish he had a website with a Guestbook so that I and many others could say so directly, so here's hoping he reads it here.

When I was 14 years old, I first heard you. Being a singer in a band myself, I knew then I had found my fauvorite musician and inspiration. Like Jimmy Hendrix, Jack was "touched by the gods!" Now I'm 50 and it still feels the same, He's the greatest, I still sing in a band (that is: another band!)and I send you my deepest feelings of friendship and a wagon full of thank you's! AND WE DID A WUNDERFUL VERSION OF YOUR FANTASTIC SONG "THEME FOR AN IMAGINARY WESTERN"! we also played "neighbour neighbour" by the way. we´ve got it on double-cd and on vhs-video (2 h) and we want to give both to you as a present for all those wunderful music you´ve given to the earth so far. So plaese tell us your postadress and the belated bithdaypresents will come soon. the "l" in "ls" in my email adress is a small L, no big i. our name ist "einer fehlt immer" meanig one is missing ivery time", because we´re nine musicans.

Not much to say only that after 30 odd years of listening to his mucic and hearing every release I was surprised and later disappointed at how under rated he was portrayed in the mucic business Mr Bruce is an artist and Harmony Row is the testament to that right.

I have been a fan since the GB Org. Was able to see you during the "How's Tricks" tour in S.F. CA. Absolutely outstanding performance. You and S. Phillips melded so completely. I bought an old 63 or 64 Gibson EB3 to play on. All the other bassists were getting Fenders or Rick, but nothing could match the tones of the Gibson. And hell, Jack played one. Still have the bass after close to 25 years. Plays great. Alas, have trouble finding folks to play with. Still have all of your albums and now have the CD's to turn the younger generation onto you. Now I teach high school. Keep producing that great music. And if you can, the next time you tour come to northwest florida of somewhere close so I can see you perform once more. Well that is about it. Thanks for all the joy I have gotten from your music. Peace/Love

Jack: Ijust wanted to tell you that I have been following you for many years. I remember meeting you at the Capital Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey, the day after Christmas in 1981 when you toured with David Sancious, Clem Clemson and Billy Cobham. The "Good Rats" opened the show which was recorded on the mobile truck outside. My brother, Phil was your bass tech back then. What a SHOW!!!!!! It will stay with me as one of my fond memories of all time. When I returned home to South Carolina after that, my band learned "Livin' Without Ya" and played it for years. I got Phil a 1965 Gibson EBO for Christmas last year as a tribute to his working with you. Glad to see your solo stuff will be re-released, it's about time!!! Thanx for all the great music through the years. Keep Rockin'-Steve

Derek, There's going to be some self-promotion in this entry and I would invite you to review it before including it, just in case you think it inappropriate. In July this year Marc Wickert organised the first Jack Bruce Congress on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. It was a chance for some of Jack's Australian fans to finally meet after corresponding for a number of years.

Dennis Lawrenson and I got together to perform at the Congress and did a bracket devoted to Jack's and Cream's music, including Sunshine of Your Love, 52nd Street, White Room, Sitting on Top of the World, Badge, Born Under a Bad Sign, Crossroads, Theme for an Imaginary Western. We also did a couple of other brackets of material by artists such as Garry Moore, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison and others.

If any of your visitors are interested I have posted sample videos and photographs of the performance on my website www.selftort.xs4.info. The videos can be found on "The Music" page of the site. There is also a version of "Theme...." that I recently recorded. I'm not happy with it yet and will re-record it.

We are hoping to hold another Congress next year, but are undecided as to venue. We may choose Sydney or return to the Gold Coast.

Looking forward to the new release.

Regards

Brian Ralston

Jack: I've been seeing you in NYC since Cream. I used to play along with "Goodbye Cream" on the drums and YOU made me teach myself the bass. I've since moved on to guitar as well (although I still play my EB0 in a jam band) and play in a marginal Cream/Mountain cover band. If you heard me sing Politican you'd be calling lawyers! I'm the guy who wears the "ON BASS FINEST IN THE WORLD JACK BRUCE" tee shirt to all your New York gigs. You noticed it at the Westbury Music Fair Ringo gig and waved to me. I'll never forget that. I piped Cream songs into my younger brother's crib and now he's my bass player! You've been a big influence to us and other players I know and for that I say thank you. God bless you and keep on tearin' it up. Brother Bill of the Kessler Bros. Band.

It is one of my favorite albums of all time.To hear this music on cd is through the roof for me.This is one of the greatest bands of all time,I believe.Nobody could do what they did! Hello. A burning question: At the end of "Crossroads" on "Wheels of Fire" are you saying ..."Eric Clapton please, the vocal", or "Eric Clapton, lead and vocal" Hmmmm. Just listened to the BBC Sessions CD. Extraordinary, the version of "Traintime" is so much faster than on "Wheels"...the whole collection is so bluesy and original...after all the years of listening, these takes sound so fresh ( no pun intended)

I saw you at the Bottom Line in new York and at the Capital Theatre in Passaic, NJ with the Jack Bruce and Friends tour in 72?; Billy Cobham, Clem Clemson, etc. My friend Bert H. was your road manager and he had your fretless base at his house during the gigs. Not in tune, and with permission, I twanged it a little. A huge moment in my life. Second huge moment, when you played The BB King Blues Club in New York earlier in 2003. You were dressed horribly in pajamas...but I digress. I was right up front and you opened with NSU. The power of your voice, the vibrato, and the playing....blew me away. One could close their eyes and it might as well been Fresh Cream/Live Cream redux. The other selections were excellent, "Sleepy Time" was excellent...could go on and on...I was outraged that there was not more publicity for this show and was especially disappointed the classic rock station, 104.3, with that blowhard Scott Muny, did not cover this or at least interview you. WHY?

Your whole musical portfolio, Cream and beyond, is amazing and has brought me so much pleasure. Here's to you and many more years of music.

Your singing, bass and keyboard playing, and overall showmanship were outstanding! I love how you performed "Theme From An Imaginary Western" and "Deserted Cities of The Heart". What a night!!

You're bass playing is phenomenol.

Have been a fan of yours seems like forever. Wonder what ever happened to the collaborative effort that was reported between yourself and B. Dylan? Is there any material on tape of that period? Also, I wonder if you ever have plans to travel and play in Asia, specifically old Siam. I have spent much of my life there and bumped into such characters as Jagger and Eartha Kitt on occassion (though not together). A well thought out and executed excursion to Bangkok would be rewarding. Thanks for all the tunes over the years. TGS

2 things:

1. In the end credits of the new Jack Black movie "School Of Rock" (excellent, by the way), Jack's co-writer credit for Sunshine Of Your Love (prominently used in the film) is "John Bruce". Kind of ironic, since the film is an homage to all things rock; and

2. Who is channeling Steve Winwood's Traffic-era B3 during They Invented Race?

Luv, plee

OK!! JUST PURCHASED AND LISTENED TO JACK'S NEW EFFORT, "MORE JACK THAN GOD" AND BEFORE I OFFER MY OPINION OF THE SONGS I WANT TO SAY THAT I AM A TREMENDOUS JACK BRUCE FAN. OWN MANY OF HIS SOLO ALBUMS AS WELL AS OTHER DISCS THAT HE GUESTED ON. FIRST OFF I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT THE OLD CREAM TUNES SOUND FINE. JACKS VOICE IS IN TOP SHAPE AND HIS BAND PERFORMS WELL. ITS FUN TO LISTEN TO JACK SING THE OLD CREAM STANDARDS LIKE POLITICIAN, WE'RE GOING WRONG AND I FEEL FREE. NOTHING MUCH MORE TO SAY ON THESE TUNES. NOW ON TO THE NEW TITLES. RATHER THAN COMMENT ON EACH ONE I WILL GIVE AN OVERALL REVIEW OF THE NEW TUNES. I WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED BY THE DOMINATION OF WHAT I FEEL ARE ROMANCE MELODIES. THERE IS EVEN A CUT THAT IS REMINISCENT OF A BROADWAY SHOW TUNE WITH A FLAIR FOR THE 1940'S. ANOTHER ODDITY THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SONGS, IN ONE PHOTO ON THE COVER, JACK IS FEATURED WITH A PRETTY LADY WHERE SHE IS HUGGING HIM. I DO NOT RECALL JACK IN THIS TYPE OF POSE ON ANY PREVIUOS ALBUM........JUST THOUGHT I'D MENTION THAT. I BELIEVE THAT THIS ALBUM IS A REFLECTION OF A SENTIMENATL JACK. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! ITS JUST THAT IF YOU EXPECT TO HEAR JACK "OPEN UP" ON HIS BASS..................WELL, YOU WON'T HEAR IT ON THIS ONE. ANOTHER ISSUE I HAVE IS WITH HIS BAND. I FOUND THE SAME TYPE OF MUSIC ON HIS LAST ALBUM. MOSTLY MELLOW TUNES. A LARTHARGIC JACK. YOU KNOW THIS CONGA PLAYER, EL NEGRO, I FIND, IN MY OPINION, IS PLAYING WHERE IT REALLY IS NOT NECESSARY, I MEAN DO WE REALLY NEED TO HEAR HIM IN "POLITICIAN"? HAVING HIM PLAY DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY TURN A TUNE INTO A LATIN SOUND. IT FAILS TOO OFTEN ON BOTH ALBUMS WITH THIS BAND. BERNIE ALWAYS BLENDS WELL WITH JACK'S PLAYING. I AM NOT ALL THAT IMPRESSED WITH THE LEAD GUITARIST (WHOSE MANE SLIPS MY MIND AT THE MOMENT) HE'S TALENTED FOR SURE!! BUT HIS STYLE IN MY OPINION DOES NOT FARE AS WELL WITH JACK'S SAY COMPARED TO THAT OF STEVE HUNTER'S (OUT OF THE STORM) NO COMMENTS ABOUT REMAINING BAND MEMBER, PERCUSIONIST, HERNANDEZ, HE'S EXCELLENT!! MAYBE JACK NEEDS A BREAK WITH THIS BAND? OR AT LEAST SOME OF ITS MEMBERS? JACK, (SHOULD YOU READ THIS) I LOVE YA, BUT PLEASE........IN YOUR NEXT RELEASE, LETS HEAR A BIT OF THE OLD JACK ON BASS AND IN SONG. YOUR GREAT FAN................HK

Well I bought my copy of More Jack Than God, wow is this record brilliant or what. From the first listen I liked it (which is a good sign with me),but the more I listen to it, it's getting into my blood ! Shadows was good but this album is supremo. A brief review (my thoughts) of the tracks is below. I'd be interested to hear what other Guestbook visitors views are to see if I'm on track. So They Invented Race: Bruce/Hanrahan, the percussion intro opens and then leads you into the dark moody sounds of Jacks great vocals and Kip's lyrics, nice keyboards and great bass. Then I notice the refrain of guitar. Is this the start f a vastly different sound to Shadows In The Air ? Great introduction song for this album 9/10. Follow the Fire: Ah ! Bruce/Brown composition up tempo Browns lyrics of highs and lows and optimism. The percussion is soo good, once again a refrain from guitar instead a great groove from Jack on piano and Bernie sounding so good on the keyboards and Jacks rollicking bass put this song into the timeless Jack Bruce category. You'll be tapping away for the rest of your days.10/10 Kelly's Blues: Bruce/Brown do it again with another change in mood and sound. Sad and lamenting lyrics make this song the perfect platform for Jacks soaring vocals we've come to know so well. Guitars strong this time but there acoustic and great.( Bernie is finding the mood on this album so well.) A gutsy effort for a gutsy song. Another song for the timeless Jack category. 10/10 We're Going Wrong: A Bruce/Brown classic from the Cream era. I am in awe of Jack’s vocals on this song .This slow moody song builds from the ground into a tumultuous tower of power and emotion. Vernon is allowed out of cell for the first time so far on the album with a frenzied guitar solo, his fingers moving into ultra overdrive but fits the intensity of this song as does the slamming rhythmically brilliant percussion.8/10 Bizness: Bruce/Brown launch a big percussion introduction then Jack goes Latin, I thought this must have been a Bruce/Hanrahan collaboration until I read the liner notes. It's not until the chorus comes along you can identify it's a Bruce/Brown composition, maybe I haven't listened to it enough but it just doesn't work for me.6/10 Progress: Bruce/Brown come up with a short slow bluesy lamenting ballad that takes you back in time to years gone by. Jack's vocals and piano are prominently wonderful. I found the simplicity of the music gave me the opportunity to absorb Pete's wonderful lyrics. 8/10 I Feel Free: Bruce/Brown ,an oldie but a goodie. The percussion fits nicely. I have heard this song so many times by Jack with different line ups. Bernies keyboards fit nicely ,Jacks vocals and bass make this song. I like the minor variation to the backing vocals towards the end of the song that extend the song out by 30 or so seconds than previous versions. 7/10 (With no disrespect to this version , my favourite was the 1984 single made for the Renault commercial. It was a heavier sound with Clempson, Bruce Gary ,and Ronnie Leah backing Jack. What a great band they were !) Ricin (Daylight Gathering): Bruce/Hanrahan . A jazzy drifting sound, with a nice groove from the rhythm section. Great to hear father and son Malcolm (on piano) on this song. Vernons lead solo flickers but kept more in the background which fits well so as not to interrupt the flow and the mood. 7/10 The Night That Was Once Mine: Bruce/Brown. Wow ! Jack doing lead vocals and backing vocals sent shivers up my neck. There could be only one thing better than Jack on a song and that’s 2 Jack's! Sensitive lyrics by Pete Brown. Jack playing piano as the lead instrument with his bass flowing beautifully to this slightly up tempo ballad. Nice solo by Vernon and fitting percussion. This song is Jack at his unique best . 10/10 Milongo Too: Bruce/Hanrahan . Jack is superb on this track delivering hauntingly beautiful music (vocals, piano, Hammond Organ and bass, how good is that for musicianship!) to compliment the equally hauntingly beautiful lyrics by Kip Hanrahan. No guitar on this track, tasteful refrained percussion.Jack doing duel lead vocals. Simply an awesome song (just wished it went for longer than 3 minutes 21 seconds.) It’s one of those songs that you just don’t want it to end. 10/10 Cold Island (For Cozy Powell): Bruce/Brown. An almost Hendrix sounding lead guitar (beautiful) introduction by Vernon Reid , lets you know you in for one heck of a song. Jack doing that backing vocals thing again (awesome). A sensitive song, lovely bass lines , fine delicate piano by Jack and a wonderful solo lead guitar interpretation by Vernon brings the song to it’s crescendo Bernie and the percussion keeping it all together. 10/10 Uh Oh !: Bruce/Hanrahan. A great blues song with Jack delivering strong vocals and brilliant piano playing keeping the lead and rhythm going . Robby Ameen on drums is the only other instrument and boy does he knock those sticks around simply superb. 10/10 Politician: Bruce/Brown. One of Jacks standards which stacks up as one of the better versions. Bernie and Vernon out of their cells for some cutting individual solo’s, Jacks vocals are tops and his bass is cranked to the hilt. All the other guys are belting along nicely also. 8/10 Lost In The City (Jam Mix): Bruce/Hanrahan. Solid rhythm percussion with Malcolm Bruce firing the start of the last track with lead licks a little akin to a Pink Floyd lead sound throughout the entire song (nicely done). (Vernon Reid is not on this track). Bernie cruising in and around gives Malcolm a break then he’s back. Jack‘s eerie interpretation of the lyrics and the jungle rhythm throbs along without change for the 7 minutes of the song . The percussion rhythm is the same as the first track “So They Invented Race”. The songs are so identical in rhythm that “Lost In The City” is part 2 of “So They Invented Race”? (An interesting way to conclude an album.) I thought this track was a little too long given the ground work had already been done on track 1. 8/10 ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Well what an album. This no throw it together and make a few bucks on the road job. The record has been cleverly and tastefully been assembled to stand the test of time. Whatever the influence, whether it’s Jacks arrangements, Margrit as Executive Producer, Kip as Producer or their just great songs by a great band (or a combination of all of the above.) You’ll be listening to this CD for years to come. Because Jack’s music is always evolving into something different ,I’m not going to pigeon whole this one and compare in greatness to any particular previous albums but it’s up there with his best work. Congratulations to all involved in the project. Regards, Dennis

Dear Jack, You are our sunshine. Serious musical question: On "Sunshine of Your Love", the drums are backwards on the verses. i.e. Ginger played on 1 and 3, instead of on the backbeats. Did you guys do this on purpose? Or was it instinctive? Or?? It is one of the most important recordings in history. We hope to know everything about it. Thank you! God bless you!

I think that with MJTG Jack and his Quico-mates have achieved the melding of jazz, rock, afro, cuban, klezmer ;) that they set out to accomplish. For me it has taken a few listenings to realize this, which is like most things that ultimately blow me away. The tracks I'm not crazy for (e.g.,"Politician") are amply balanced by what I believe is among Jack's best work ever. The bass and vocals are recorded with extreme clarity and power while maintaining exemplary ensemble support at all times. A lesson to us all.

Given the right handling, this deserves a Grammy.

HELLO TO JACK BRUCE FROM DAN PELOW. HOPE YOU ARE DOING QUITE WELL. I COULD NOT GET TO NYC TO SEE YOUR SHOW, BUT REALLY WISH I COULD HAVE. I HOPE YOU TOUR THE U.S. SOON. I HAVE BEEN IN THE SAME ROOM(good seats) WITH SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS MUSICIANS THAT GOT THEIR LAUNCH AT THE END OF THE SIXTIES(Eric too), AND ITS A DREAM OF MINE TO BE AT A PERFORMANCE OF YOURS. ALL FAME PRAISE ASIDE, I ADMIRE YOUR MUSICAL TALENT AND ABILITY, AS ITS GREAT. I LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING YOUR NEW ALBUM. JUST AS BEETHOVEN WAS THE "CREAM" OF HIS DAY, YOU ARE THE "BACH" OF OURS(Ok, maybe just the beethoven) SPEAKING OF BACH, MAYBE YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE SO, BUT YOU SHOULD COMPOSE SOME CELLO SOLO'S OR SOME SYMPHONIC COMPOSISTIONS OF SOME KIND TO BE RELEASED AS JUST THAT, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. TAKE CARE AND KEEP ON TOURING. OH, IF YOU EVER SEE MY NAME AT A SHOW OR ELSEWHERE, SAY HELLO, MAYBE WE COULD JAM TOGETHER(ME ON GUITAR)(IF FOR A MINUTE), UNTIL THEN I'LL KEEP "DREAMING".

Haven't heard the new CD yet, but have been a fan of Jack's since the Cream days. My favorite song is "Theme to An Imaginary Western." While I've got you here, may I take this opportunity to introduce you to a promising "new" singer/songwriter? His name is Glen Phillips(formerly with Toad the Wet Sprocket.) He has an excellent new CD out called "Live at Largo." You can check it out @ www.glenphillips.com or www.awarestore.com.

Thanks!

DEAR JACK, JUST PICKED UP NEW CD, MORE JACK THAN GOD, AND AS USUAL, ANOTHER GREAT COLLECTION. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THE DVD FROM CANTERBURRY FAYRE, YOUR VOICE SOUNDS GREAT AS ALWAYS, REALLY LOVE 52ND STREET, YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD ABOUT TODAY'S MUSIC INDUSTRY, AND AS A NOTE, IT'S BEEN THAT WAY SINCE 1976 WHEN FRAMPTON HIT IT BIG. I AM AWAITING YOUR CD, LIVE FROM THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST, ANXIOUS TO HEAR TUNES FROM HARMONY ROW LIVE. THAT WAS AN OUTSTANDING ALBUM, FIRST GOT IT IN 1970 WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. PETE BROWN'S LYRICS REALLY REFLECT THE GINSBURG, KEROUAC ERA.

JACK, KEEP UP THE BRILLIANT WORK, AND HOPE YOU MAKE IT TO CHICAGO, TAKE CARE, RON

I remember a documentary in the early '70s that aired on American public television. It included some interviews interviews, shots of Jack w/Ginger and John McGlaughlin and some footage of Jack on his island, as featured on the inside cover of Harmony Row. Does anyone out there have any information on this? It would be great to find if it is still out there somewhere.

Dear Jack, I do hope you will read this note. When Cream disolved I had to ask myself why I love their music so much. The answer came to me in an instant: Jack Bruce! I have read that you were asked to join Ginger and Eric but I always felt that you were the un-elected leader. You wrote the music that made Cream my favorite group. Your powerful and soulfull voice sang all the pieces I love so much. I have instructed my sons that if someday I have a wake or funeral that they must play "Spoonfull" in tribute to my love for this piece. Your bass was the leading thunder for the best Cream had to offer us. Anyone who may doubt this has only to listen to the live version of "Tales of Brave Ulysses", (Live Cream volume two). Your bass lead the rise and fall of every note, especally the ending. My sons and many of their musician friends who listen to and play the heavy punk type rock we hear so much today, are noticably impressed when I play "Tales" for them: "Damn" "That was ass kickin'"!!! Everyone who knows me knows that you are my "Main Music Man". "The Master", thats what I call you; even to your face! I was the one who at your San Francisco gig of ten years ago shouted, "THE MASTER", to which you replied, "Did someone say "faster"? I shouted "THE MASTER" once again. You said a long "oh". I have allways belived that you just wanted to hear it one more time. I was standing next to your sons in the audience. By the way, did you name Malcolm after Malcolm Lowry? ("The Concel At Sunset") Thank you for "More Jack Than God". From the photos in "More Jack" you look as though you are growing older beautifully. I was suprised that, up till now, no one has mentioned, "Daylight Gathering". It is a sublime piece with a beautiful melody. "Clear maps of the skys in my daughter's eyes",how tender and beautiful. I have not heard anything so impressive by anyone since "Directions Home"'another heartfelt and supurb piece. And another thing since I am up on my soap box: I have heard some critics say some not-so-good things about West Bruce and Lang. Hogwash! I wonder if they are brain dead! I will use pieces such as "Pollution Woman" and "Like a Plate" to illustrate my point. Tell me those are not great pieces of music and I'll say: "you aren't listening!". You don't belong in the same room with those of us who are! Alright - there - I've said it: I like West Bruce and Lang. When I read that you had some health problems, my heart sank for a minute.I am so glad that you are recovering. I know that you are a "strong Scotsman". My ancesters were from Scotland, (Wallace Clan). The thought of loosing you I am not prepaired to deal with. I know that soon you will write a major piece - a composition that will identify your gift to the ages. You kinow you have it in you.

I await your next masterpiece!

Much more than a fan,

Lawrence Ghent.

P. S. I hope you can appciate this: My sons are helping me build the family home, and yesterday I said, "did I tell you guys that Jack Bruce had to have a liver transplant?" "No - my God - is he allright?" "Yes, I think he is recovering nicely." "Well, what happened to the old liver?" "I don't know, why?". "I was wondering if he was selling it on E-Bay: I could pick it up for you cheep". "No, boys, I don't think so". Trafficking in used body parts is strictly prohibited by law". "My boys, I'll caution you that in the future you are not to speak so irrevently about Jack's liver".

I new Jack when he pissed about with a double bass, he wont remember me from EastKilbride, I hung about with Dougie Hutton and the rest in Jam sessions, I worked in the co op while he made his mark in life, good on you son, I had to listen to his mother burn my ears of hoe good her son was, I would slag his playing, just to wind her up, it was worth it just to watch her go red in the face. Some people go forward in life, and others just lay stagnent, Jack in my eyes is a legend in his own right, God bless son, get well.live , and make peoples ears ring with the stroke of that bass.

Jack...so glad to here you're doing so much better. I wanted to thank you for your contributions to all bass players. You are THE bass player that showed a young aspiring bassist back in 1970 how to play bass more than just "playing in the pocket" and sing with conviction. I am in proud to have been your pupil from afar. God Bless you as you continue on the mend. Hopefully we'll meet someday.
