Dear Bruce, a close friends of mine whose name is Wolfgang Freye celebrates his 50th birthday septembre this year. He lives with you (and your music) for more than half of his life (even if you didn't realize). We will publish a small book for his birthday. And he would be very happy and very proud, if there were some words from Jack Bruce in this book (f.i. about concerts in Essen,in the ruhr area or in Germany). And we were happy to. Is there any chance for a message ? Please answer to the adress above.

Lets all appreciate the awesome presence and musical virtuosity that has enabled the man to slot chameleon-like into any band with seamless dexterity. Its time, long overdue for the young musicians of today who wander aimlessly into styles forced upon them by the commercially driven market place to revisit the musical legacy left behind in the wake of such greats as Jack Bruce. I will never tire of listening. Mick...

Jack, I have a box set of The Cream. Two live disks and two studio. I play them all the time as I have most of my life. Some of my freinds tell me I'm musically stuck in the past. I tell them they have some catching up to do. Love you Jack bruce. Thank you so much. Phil Townson

I saw Cream in '69 at the Corral in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I started playing Bass 16 months later. Jack was having so much fun. The fans gave them 3 standing ovations. The next day in Edmonton they said that was the best crowd ever. Jack's best solo for me is Apostrophe with Frank Zappa. Around 1990 I bought a 1968 Gibson EB3 in tribute for the influence that Jack's playing had on me. I've had a lot of fun too! Thanks Jack!

Well, the first time I heard Jack was when he played with a group in which a guitar player, many people called GOD, played nice blues licks. Although I played guitar, from that point on I knew which side of the music I was ! Thanks a million times to Jack for what his compositions, his bass playing and vocal have brought to me ! As I often answer in interviews when asked with what musicians I'd like to play, I answer : with Jack Bruce on bass and Jack Bruce on vocals ! jfm l'inguitarissable http://www.jfmathieu.com

hello Derek and JACK,

between me and my 19 year old daughter, my 15 year old son and 13 year old daughter, our favorite track is #7 from BBM. What you, Ginger and Gary do with "we're going wrong" (why does love have to go wrong") is tremendous.

I saw you at Toads in 88, and I try to emulate your ingenuity whenever I play, as I jam with my kids.

Thanks Jack

Jack - I'm sixteen and having a good time with my band. My band plays improvised electric blues, though not to original still a good time :) I just wanted and thank you so much for everything you have done for me in the past years, with your fantastic playing and song writing. It has inspired me along with my friends (band members) to produce music we enjoy and love instead of trying to play songs that appeal to the musical wants of our generation,i.e rap and punk. Thank you so much for what you did and are doing. I hope to keep you updated on my bands progress.

keep on rockin, Ben - guitarist

I am just learning of your illness. I hope that this new year will bring only the very best for you.

Theme From An Imaginary Western is probably my favorite song...it literally changed the direction of my entire life...

I was listening to a version of Theme and looked into the mirror while driving along the beach. The sun was falling into the water*..it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

All of this happened-by accident-some 34 years ago.

Thank you so much for creating this song.

Very Best Regards,

"Wheels of Fire" is a great album. Jack's lyrics and music helped me through lonely times and painted visions in my head. "As You Said" is such a trippy song. Having met a Scottish lassie only added to the the endless want. i was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind and key of harmonica Jack used when he jammed "Traintime" on "Wheels of Fire". Dear Jack

I found your site while I was doing a Google search for the greatest rock guitarists and thought I had to write. As much as I hate when "old" people proudly (or sympathetically) state their age, I'm 55 and wanted to let you know that Cream was an inspiration to me when I was at Uni doing architecture.

I was a lad from the country and had my first taste of new music as a big Beatles fan, then got exposed to very different music when I hit the big city. Cream really hit a nerve for me and I couldn't believe that 3 guys could make so much sound.

I played "Spoonful" so many times and was inspired by how you all seemed to go off on your own tangents, do your own virtuoso things then it all came back together for "the finale". I think I even started to appreciate bass guitar through that piece of music. To me it was enormously creative and obviously because I liked it so much, it has a similarity to what I like to do in my architecture -a sense of chaos, but with an underlying structure and pattern (not always obvious to the untrained eye/ear).

When I found this site, I was shocked to hear that you had had a liver transplant. I went to a concert in Perth a few years back where the Bill included Roger Daltry, Peter Frampton (big fan of his), Gary Brooker etc, etc and one of the main people I went to see was Jack Bruce - and he didn't appear!!!! That really took away a lot from the concert and I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that a few people around me said "Where's Jack Bruce?" I thought I'd be the only old bastard to know who you were!! I guess the liver transplant explains your absence.

Something I've got into in recent times is how wonderful live DVD's are to display the talents of artists and one I've got is David Gilmour's. I love seeing guys of my vintage displaying how brilliant they are and have said a few times to my kids "Take a look at that guy, if you passed him on the street, what would you think?" I then suggested "Would you just think he's an older generation guy? Check out his talent" and hope that it gets through that they shouldn't take people of the older generation for granted. Believe me this is not a preachy thing, hopefully it's an awareness thing which will help them.

Enough rabbitting on, one request which no doubt has crossed your mind - if you're up to it - why not do at least a one off live concert with Ginger and Eric where you do your great numbers (definitely an extended version of Spoonful). I've seen so many reformations of groups recently and they've performed extremely well (the concert for George Harrison - wonderful and very touching, especially with his cloned son - that was spooky). All I ask is a one off to put on video the talent you guys have (there is almost nothing on video/DVD from your heyday). You deserve the chance to immortalise yourselves. I'd be very surprised if you didn't play and sing as well (it's amazing how powerful adrenaline is :-) ).

So there's my request and my tribute - I hope you think about the former and enjoy the latter.

Frank Young

PS Another connection - I was born in Scotland and although I feel very Aussie, I still feel a tie to Scotland and am proud to admit to my Scottish heritage.

It would be great if yourself Eric and Ginger got together to peform six one-off concerts at the Royal Albert Hall or something.

Hi Jack!

Somehow I've known you quite some time. Were but a teenager, when I first listened to "I feel free" and "Tales of Brave Ulysses", which turnes my head completely and made me and a couple of friends go see Cream live in Copenhagen. Since those days I've been hooked! For many years now (long time before the e-mail came around) I've wanted to tell you how your work has been inspiring me, and how great an impact your singing has made on me - like no other vocalist. Saw you last time in Copenhagen autumn 2001 - what a pleasure!! That's pretty much what I like you to know. Your integrity and devotion has been setting a standard to which I´ve always been referring, whereever I was engaged.

My best wishes for a long, productive future Jens

Was reading a Clapton interview in current issue of Guitar Mag (or some such), and he absolutely shat on Cream's live rendition of Crossroads, saying he was out of synch with "1" during his second guitar solo and other disparagements. No word on the contributions of Jack & Ging.

Am I the first to wish Jack a happy birthday? - 61 today and decidedly still rockin'........long may you continue to do so sir!

It's actually also my son's 6th birthday today so it's easy for me to remember both.

For British viewers it is also apparently Eric's birthday too...

No - not that one!

The great and sadly missed comedian Eric Morecambe of course (or so my diary's useful daily event says here).

I hope the recovery is continuing well Jack, and I look forward to your return to recording and performing.

Happy Birthday! How odd that I should happen to find this website on your birthday! Last week I was listening to Take It Back while driving around Scotland and I had to keep playing it over and over. I wish I knew for sure what 'It' was. Your voice is outrageously original and will go down in history as one of the true vocal delights. Let's get you playing in Gloucestershire! Jen

I am 15 years old and I have been a huge fan of Cream for a couple years now. I just wanted to tell you that you still have one of the greatest voices I have ever heard, and your influence as a bassist is still being felt today. I have a band of my own, and we do primarily blues-rock. As a matter of fact, the first song we ever played together was Sunshine Of Your Love. I am a guitar player and of course Eric is one of my idols, but I am just as much influenced by what you and Ginger did also, both with Cream and in other musical pursuits.

Anyway...happy birthday and best wishes!

Jack,

Your work is OUTSTANDING! I was reminded of this fact upon finding your website and playing the snippets from your solo albums.

So POWERFUL!!

I think Sting should pay you a royalty for every recording he sells.

Also, STELLAR work in "Cream". (understatement) You guys influenced a gangly fourteen year old kid (me) to fall in love with music and take up the guitar.

I still play for a living today at age 48.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for helping me find my life's work.

Get well, Jack. You mean much more to us than you'll ever know.

I have been a Cream aficionado since I was in high school so when I found that Jack Bruce had many solo albums I just had to check them out. What I found was truly amazing inspirational music. What I heard blew me away because of how different it sounded not only from music of its own time but from todays music as well. Jack Bruce has demonstrated a unique quality that only the most brilliant musicians have, which is the ability to surpass his own best to continually reach new levels of musical and artistic greatness. Thanks for the inspiration Jack and keep those great songs comin'

Hi Jack,

I first heard your music rather late in life - 10 years ago at the age of 34 - introduced by my husband-to-be who's a bit older and a longstanding fan. Wish I'd heard you sooner but it was all classical music in my early years (sound familiar?) and so I missed out on a lot of good stuff in the 60's! I now have a 15 year old son, Adam, who is learning to play bass and for whom you are a role model, as Ginger Baker was for my husband with his drumming. I was hoping you might play at the Scribbler's Picnic but realise now that that isn't possible - so I'll just have to hold out for next year!! It has been good to visit your website. Love,

Jenne

Your recent music is wonderful and your band kicks ass! My life has been greatly enriched by your music. I look forward to your future work with great anticipation. Jack

Congratulations on your birthday and on your continued recovery. We need you back in the studio and on the road, man. I saw Clapton at Newcastle Arena 2 weeks ago: what a flat show, no atmosphere and he didn't acknowledge the crowd once, only playing 2 encores and leaving without playing a further 4. And the point? Well - I've seen you play 5 times in the last 4 years and EVERY time you played and sang with great enthusiasm and like you were 25 years old. Couldn't fault your talent of course, and your attitude was even better. After waiting 26 years for a Cream re-union I've finally realised what I suspected for too long - that you're the driving force and frankly Eric and his laid-back approach just doesn't deserve you! So keep the Bruce flame burning and make sure you keep rocking.

Rob

Hi, Jack! You and Chris Squire are the best bass players in the world, in my opinion. When will you come here, in Brazil? I would like very much see you playing your bass in Rio de Janeiro. I play bass guitar too and the Cream records are my favorites. I have an Epiphone EB-3 bass (unfortunately, I don't have a Gibson EB-3 bass guitar). I am looking for your new record ("More Jack than God"), but here, in Brazil, we have some dificulties to find some records. I like West, Bruce & Laing very much too and I have some records of them. Thank you for you attention and we are waiting your visit here. Regards.

I was fortunate to have caught CREAM on their first tour of the US at the Murray the "K" show in NYC. Never before was there such powerful music that the seats vibrated. While I was familiar with Eric Clapton from his Yardbird days, I always considered Jack to be the heart of the band. I still consider "Songs for a Tailor" to be one of the finest albums ever. Not bad when you're supported with the likes of Jon Hiseman and Dick Heckstall-Smith. Thank You.

I was pretentious enough to compare my voice to yours when I was a kid, Jack. I didn't really come close. It goes without saying you're a virtuso on the bass, but I still enjoy your singing as much as ever. Still fascinated at the things I keep discovering in "Consul at Sunset." Bless you mate, keep it coming.

Happy Birthday, Jack!

I'm only 51 (saw you in Detroit 30 some years ago-a great memory), and I nearly died 2 years ago from a fungus in my head. At each day's end I now look back at the wonders I received that day. Sometime's it's just a child's eyes, or a black bird's song. I treasure things more. Make sure I really see them, hear them, feel them - storing them up as complete memories. I'm so glad you've survived , too, and I hope you'll have ever so many more birthdays, all more fun than the last. XOX Karin Sue Hoppe Holloway

Jack,

Your'e the reason I started playing Bass in and around Glasgow when I was 16.

Now 49 years old and gigging in and around Glasgow and various Blues festivals with Blues-Rock Band "Roost" I am still inspired by Jack Bruce on a daily basis, as indeed I know many others on the Glasgow Blues and Rock scene are.

At a recent gig in Glasgow's "Rockers" I changed the EQ setings on my "Hartke" to emulate the "Growling" punchy "Middle" - type sound that's so much a Jack Bruce trademark.

Just as a "One Off" and as a tribute to the great survivor of our times you understand, but to great effect.

Thanks for everything.

Love and best wishes.

Hi Jack,

I'm a first-time visitor to your website, but your music has always been a source of great inspiration to me -- probably one of the main reasons why, at the rebarbative age of 50, I have the nerve to be setting up my own recording studio to immortalize some ditties (were I a painter, I would call them "daubs") of my own.

By the way, I'm in the process of ordering an Epiphone Elitist EB-3 bass, one of the chief recommendations for which was that it was "made famous by Jack Bruce".

It's good enough for me.

Wishing you all the best,

Jeffrey Pierce

Dear Jack,

first time finding you in internet I will send you my best wishes for the future. You must know that you was it who made me loving the bass! Since the late 60’s I always listen in every piece of music for the bass! But at least I reached to buy me a bass in 1997 - when I was 49 years old! In between I own three basses and two amps with one speaker. But sadly this don't mean that I can play really the bass. There's less of time to learn powerfull.

Hope, you will do some concerts here in Germany in the next time.

Good luck and best wishes!

Helge

PS: In the background is playing "I Feel Free" from your "More Jack Than God".

I have just recently been given a pirate copy of songs for a tailor and was so impressed that I went straight out and bought a legit copy and also got harmony row at the same time, honest, i'kept the reciept in case you send the music polis to my door. I first heard songs for a tailor when i was about 18, some 30 odd years ago. I cant believe that i left it so long to get into jack again but i have been side tracked by the works of E.L.P especially Greg Lake whose voice, bass playing and lyrics I thought were and still are incredible but at the moment all i can play is J.B i.e when you awaken at 5.00am, go down stairs slap on the headphones and play songs for a tailor before going to work, i think that classes you as an admirer of the man (or a looney).Remember, nae polis, rock on Jack, best wishes, gordon the biker.

Hope you're OK, first picked up on you at the age of 11. (1972),heard you'd been in some band called Cream, found you were playing with Carla Bley etc, then saw you with Charlie Watts at Bracknell 1979 playing a double bass. Great musical education for any teenager. When I was young I didn't realise rock musicians could actually play Jazz! Saw Jeff Beck last week at the Apollo in Manchester do some amazing stuff, a week from his 60th birthday. Any chance of a gig there sometime with one or two special guests?

I'll soon be 50 years old and I grew up on Cream. However, except for the obvious "power rotation" numbers on corporate radio, I had not heard much of the deeper stuff in quite a while. That changed a few weeks ago when I heard "Deserted Cities of the Heart" for the first time in years and...like a revelation I understood, like several posters above, that it was Jack who was the guiding force behind this group's material. I have missed his voice; what a unique, powerful vocalist! I once had both "Songs for a Tailor" and "Harmony Row" on 8-track and hadn't heard either in years, so I ordered "..Tailor" and have enjoyed being reaquainted with those unique songs. I'll be ordering "Harmony Row" this week sometime.

Jack, I'm sorry to hear of your recent illness but relieved to hear that you're mending nicely. You could have sold out, formed a Cream-soundalike band and bludgeoned what we love about you to death but you remained true to your muse, commercial prospects be damned. That's the definition of a true artist.

Hi Jack,

I was gutted to hear I missed you in the past in Bournemouth and came looking to see if you were touring this year.

Whilst I was shocked to hear of your recent medical trauma, I am glad to find that you have successfully commenced that first step to recovery - I add my prayers to those already offered on your behalf.

The 'something planned' for next year has my attention and I hope that all of us, your fans, get to see you out there performing once again.

Every good wish

For me, the only male voice in rock-music. In times, when I lived by my parents, I had many posters at the wall in my room of CREAM. Jack, for me, is the best bass player I know. And the bass is my favorite instrument. Sorry, my English is not the best. Hope, you understand what I mean. At the beginnings of the 80´s I visited a concert of you in mannheim, where I live. As much as I remember, you played with simon pilipps. Unforgettable! Ok, it´s all I wanted to say. One for all: Jack is the best rock-musician I know. Regards.

Mr. Bruce---A couple of the fellas from the great rock and roll band from Brooklyn called Federale were hangin' out recently listening to your incredible bass playing throughout your career. Over a couple of beers, the West Bruce and Laing album "Why Dontcha", and the legendary Cream album "Disraeli Gears", as well as some sundry other additives--we came to a conclusion: You are, indisputably, one of the greatest bass players that ever lived. Thank you so much for all you have done--keep rockin'. And if you're ever in Brooklyn...

Hi Jack, I saw you last year at BB Kings when you performed in your pajamas. I hadn't seen you since your first shows in New York. I sat in the first row at the Murray the K Show at that show that Cream played, as well as The Who, Mitch Ryder, The Blues Project etc. I was also at that show at the Anderson Theater in the East Village (pre Fillmore East) where Cream and Moby Grape headlined but Moby did not show up so they had Richie Havens, the Soul Survivors and PG & E play. I still listen to Fresh Cream often in the morning, in my car on the way to work to get my engines revved up. I probably wouldn't have written except that I saw that you were sick and wanted you to know that I've always respected and admired your music and ability. I sincerely hope that you recover fully and can come back out to play again. Best regards, Paul Burstyn

Jack - I just saw where you underwent treatment for liver cancer. My best wishes to you, old friend, may you make a speedy recovery and get back to your friends and family! I saw you at the NAMM Show, back in '90 with Ginger and Blues Salcedo, I got right up front and let me tell you, that show blew my mind. You were more of an influence on me than my parents(good or bad) and without your music, I'd probably have taken up the accordian! God Speed Jack Bruce, may the wind be at your sail and the sun always on your horizon.....

I first heard Fresh Cream when I was 15 (now I,m 50) from that moment on I was hooked. Sadly Cream had just broke up, but I've been a staunch fan ever since. Most weekends I put on one of the 'Those were the Days' CD's and drum along trying to emulate Ginger's poly rythms (with some success after all these years) I have never tired of the music and it's just as exiting as when I first heard it. There will never be trio to match Cream. Jack I just love your harmonica playing and singing on 'Traintime', classic stuff. 'Never tell your mother she's out of tune' is brilliant as well. God bless you squire.

Jack, you are the best bassist of all time. I'm gonna say it again, You are the best bass player of all time. You have inspired me so much, you are the reason i play the bass. I saved up my money to buy an SG style bass (epiphone) to be as much as i could like you during cream. Cream has such good music and was so influential to rock music. Your solo work is also fantastic and i think it is over shadowed a bit by your cream days. I wish you great health and full recovery.

Greetings Jack! Praise the Lord !!! I thank God for answering prayer and putting you back on the road to recovery. It was gratifying to have read your letter confirming this fact even on your birthday, May14. You've only begun to recover. You will see your 70th birthday and beyond. Upon hearing last year that you were seriously ill I was much concerned and began praying for you. Frequently I would lift you up before the Messiah saying , " God, heal Jack!" Time and again I would apply Messiah's blood for your healing . The robber that would suck on your soul will not reach his goal of cutting your life short . I'll never let him get above. No surrender ! Your right to another 9 years of life at least is promised by God. "Threescore and ten years have been allotted to man and if by reason of strength even more." Do not let the assassins of faith rob you of that power. How ? By condemning and judging the conduits of His healing streams. Such names would be Graham Cook, Benny Hinn , Morris Cerillo or Bart Pierce. These servants of God are used by Him for working His miracles. Such men are only a few of the many He is using in these modern times to transmit His power. Creative miracles are occurring. New body parts are being formed in Messiah's name, Jesus. No doubt the religious crowd has judged you Jack but Yeshua never has. He wants to fully restore your health because He loves you. He gifted you with that musical brilliance. In your case The Best Is Still To Come. Not surprisingly when you fully recover I will be singing at full voice, I'm So Glad, in the highways and cafes.

Thanks for the excellence in music from Cream to the present. GratefullyJohn Flanagan

I know you and Ginger have problems, but just think how much money you can make on this. Plus, just how happy you would make alot of us old hippies. To be honest, i don't even know if Ginger Baker is alive and well. And if he is alive and well, can he still play as well as he did. oh yes, i remember toad I still listen to it. Wheels of fire baby, oh ya!! But anyway, thankyou for all the years of good music.

Fearfully worried was I when I learned of JB's medical problem. Until now I had not lately visited his website, but to seek reassurance of his recovery, today I took a peek.

So relieved am I to read of his successful surgery and recovery. To be told that he expects to be back in action soon enough is to me incomparable delight. For all the brilliant work he has produced for nearly forty years he remains for me a principal beacon of musical power and beauty. To think that I may look forward to more of his endeavors (and maybe, I pray, another USA tour?) fills me with anticipatory joy. May we hear the wonder of his music for years to come.

Just chuckled at a thought. Back in the '60s, London graffiti read "Clapton is God". But as our man's last album points out, Bruce is even more Jack than that.

I know that Ginger used to tell you you were too busy, but before you burst onto the scene, the term creative and bass player were totally mutually exclusive in rock music. I'm glad you had the balls to risk upsetting Ginger and that you invented instrumental/improvisational rock. When I hear some of these bands today, they're so boring, I wonder if they even know what the term "buzz" really means. Cream gave me a massive "buzz" when I first heard them and they changed my life forever. Eric's beautiful, emotionaly pure blues guitar, your amazing pulsing, Beethoven style bass and Ginger Baker's fantastic Salvador Dali Style Drumming(Thumping anthemic tom toms, bossa nova, rock, jazz seamlessly blended together in the SAME SONG???!!!) produced a sound that was completely unique. Thanks for the most intense 'buzzes' I ever experienced through music or anything else...

I teach a music appreciation class at a small College in South Eastern Colorado. I played a de Machaut, "Quant en moi" composition as an example of a Motet. The text pointed out that the two poems in the piece each stood on their own individually, but also interacted with each other to create a new meaning. I was reminded of Jack's "Boston Ball Game 1967," that follows a similar pattern. Anyone out their know, was this a conscious emulation of Machaut or some other composer? Anyone know of other examples that I might share with my class? I know Jack attented formal music school and may have been exposed to Machaut.

Jack, I felt moved to write this after visiting your website for the first time in a while and finding the news about your illness, the operation and your recovery. Because you have been so important to my musical development (amongst other things, without you I would haven't discovered the guv'nor, J.S.Bach), I wanted to write and say a profound "thank you".

Because of your obvious respect for classical music (which now includes jazz, blues and rock) I feel sure you will understand what I write below about Cream and Lifetime, who were truly "classic".

I was never into rock bands in which the other members simply supported the guitar hero. Some people still don't get the idea that Cream were truly great because they were perhaps the ONLY rock band in which all three members were equally leading while yet really listening to each other. Three tremendously free musical talents steaming ahead in a spirit of creative joy, sparking and stimulating each other. I believe it was this image of evident musical brotherhood (despite or even because of the rows between you and Ginger)and this image of such dynamic joyous creativity in action that made people love Cream so much and remember you all so affectionately. That love surprised the band members themselves on 26 Nov 1968 at the farewell gig at the Albert Hall, right Jack ? As you once said, Jack, "Cream was really a jazz band; only we didn't tell Eric". The very best example of Cream's genius, I feel is "Spoonful" on the "Wheels of Fire". The greatest improvisation in the history of rock I have always felt, it is perfectly balanced; everything happens just at the right instant - every Clapton chord, every Bruce bass note, every Baker cymbal hit - just perfection. The song around the improvisation is also a blues masterpiece with tremendous phrasing and nuances of feeling - one of your greatest pieces of singing. I have listened to "Spoonful" hundreds of times, never tiring of it. It is an inspiration to hear such a performance of three great musicians inspiring each other at such a dynamic level. The only time I've heard anything comparable was when you played in "Lifetime" in Nov 1970 at Manchester University - the greatest electric gig I've ever been to - a life-changing revelation for me. The lack of a Lifetime live album from 1970 is a great loss to music.

I thank you deeply for all the wonderful music you've put into the world, Jack, not least for the bass which you single-handedly ennobled, and I wish you many more equally creative years ahead.

Terry

If you ever have time to respond, One of my favorite albums is West Bruce & Lang "What ever turns you on" which i still have; How did you ever get together with this mid-west guitarist? I will always have a special place in my heart for your "Slow Blues" from the above mentioned album. Was West and Lang there when you did the keyboards? I was in the military at the time of this album release, and heard some cuts from John Peel on Radio Luxenburg; We drove to a Canadian PX in the Black Forest to buy it. I am so gla you are still out there,..... Thanks for everything.

Jack, I grew up on bass listening to you as my absolute idol and inspiration, in the seventies. I had my elbow on the stage when you played the ROXY on sunset in '76, when you played the fretless. I wasn`t the only one who saw the neck smoking when you were finished that night. Yours was the best concert I`ve ever seen, bar NONE! I bought an EB-3 and had a lot of fun playing in bands in the seventies. I owe all of that to you, and I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart , for you made it what it was for me. Theres no words to convey the depth of your influence but I know your soul touched mine somehow and truly affected my life in a magical way through your excellent music. You have always been my main hero !

Hoping you're doing well Jack! Take care, Tristan

I play bass too. Certainly, Jack Bruce and Chris Squire are the most important bass players for me. I have the completely collection of Cream and I hear "Spoon Full" (Wheels of Fire) almost every day. Nobody plays bass guitar like Jack. He is unique. Jim Roberts wrote that Jack "inspired him to become a bass player" (How The Fender Bass Changed The World). I hope that Jack Bruce come and play here, in Brazil, some day. The first ticket will be mine. Long live, Jack! Jim Roberts escreveu que Jack "o inspirou a se tornar um baixista" (How The Fender Bass Changed The World). Eu espero que Jack Bruce possa vir e tocar aqui, no Brasil, algum dia. O primeiro ingresso será meu. Vida longa, Jack!

Ive listened to cream since 1968,played guitar for over 25 years.I have always enjoyed your playing and because of your influence im considering switching to bass,in theses days of nothing but guitarists a good bassist is hard to find..you are a great bassist..always have been. You have shown me 2 things through your playing..1 a bassist can write songs..2 a bassist can lead a band.Of course guitarists dont like that fact.Hope you get back with cream, just so we can see the power once again.Best wishes...a dedicated fan..36 years.

Just read that Cream are considering playing again. Hooray, for that must mean you are feeling much better. I recently purchased a CD of the BBC sessions. That version of "Politician" is fantastic, it is now my favorite recording by Cream. If the reunion goes well in London, hopefully Cream will cross the pond and play some shows in America. Good luck, and all the best.

Hello Jack,

It's ZE BOND ROCKS. We hope you are feeling better and ready to play again. I hear that a Cream reunion/rehersals and shows in London are in the works....That will be Great!!!...I hope we can be there....Cream Rocks!

It was a pleasure to meet you & your wife at the train station in Leicester earlier this Spring(end of May.) Lyn Ze was carrying her guitar(Les Paul) and we talked with you for a minute. We asked you for directions to the bus station.

We were so disoriented & didn't have a chance to explain our situation. We were invited to come over to England from America to play a benefit for Parkinson's Disease in the West Midlands at the end of May put on ex-Budgie member Pete Boot. We payed our own way there. He arranged an opening gig for us(for which we didn't get paid), We recieved our picture & press in the Express & Star(Walsall edition), did some interviews for a music magazine and then were dropped from the show and left at the Train Station in Wolverhampton......without explanation, $$$ or direction.

We struggled & stood strong thru it all....Walked alot(passed many Clock towers) and played at Vic's Pub. We sold our band CD's & T-shirts on the street to earn $$$ for bus tix and food and we were very glad to make it to Amsterdam-where we had paying gigs that we booked ourselves.

Please visit our website @ http://www.zebondrocks.com and let us know if there are any upcoming performances that you might need an opening band for. Royal Albert Hall, etc. We are a full sounding, dedicated 2-piece band.

ZE BOND ROCKS would like to send you a CD sometime. Thanks for the cigarette & Tell Nancy we said hello.

my dad had liver cancer and tried experimental treatments, to try and defeat it. i hope the technology has advanced enough in this time and age to help a person heal from this life threatening disease. I must admit that when i saw the cream at the syndrome in chicago in 68, that ginger baker was my hero, even though he sounded like 10 drummers playing at one time, he needed you jack, to compliment his playing when he wasn't doing a solo. When you do get on your feet again, and start rehearsal for the re-union at ralh,a song that would really sound good with a cream touch,is the john mayall tune "california". i heard a version of that song by the cashman vaquero band years ago, and thought that the cream could really do a great jam on this tune. get better soon before that bass and amp start getting dusty. dd

Hi Jack, I last saw you live with West, Bruce and Laing in the Seattle Center Arena many years ago; I have never been so impressed w a singer nor any other bass player. Lately, I have been exploring the possibility of getting fine artists like you of our generation prime time airplay in the US market. I have been dismayed to find that artists such as Neil Young get so little exposure for their current work that they turn to other media, like moviemaking! I feel your current/recent work as well as most of your solo recorded performances stand up well to the classic rock standards played by our local C Rock stations, but they won't play them. The genra is the same or similar, so what's the problem? I hear there will be a live Cream reunion next year. I wonder if you three can break this "spell" for the rest of the fine, more matured rock artists who are being frozen out! I have suggested to several stations that they try playing say a "Cream" version of "White Room" with one of your or Eric's newer renditions with no success. What do you think is up with this?

I'm glad I visited the guest-book. I was unaware of any rumblings about a Cream re-union. Great news. I saw Cream at the Family Dog in Denver, Colorado in 1967 when I was really too young (12) to go to concerts.

Anyone out their find it ironic that the least versitile and technically gifted of the Trio, (Clapton) has had the most successful career? Don't get me wrong, I've always loved Clapton's playing, but unlike Jack, your never going to see Eric play with a Tony Williams, a John McGlaughlin, a Larry Coryell etc. I was always disapointed that Eric never got into a Jazz /Blues thing like a Kenny Burrel or like George Benson with Jimmy Smith. Unlike Jack, he never learned to play changes. Share your thoughts with me.

Hi Jack

Glad to hear you are recovering well! I am 17 and have been listening to Cream since I was knee high, it was all my dad would play! I have always enjoyed your music, and now I am older I have tracked down your back catologue, which I enjoy just as much as the Cream stuff. Hope the rumours of a reunion are true! If they are I would give my right arm to come and see the shows, as, for obvious reasons I was just a bit too late to see Cream in 1968!

Take care & hope to see you on tour soon

Shaun

Jack, I was delighted when I heard about the Cream reunion, but I have one request. Keep Eric Clapton on his toes. He is a great guitarist, but for the last thirty years he has been relying on his routine. He seems to shun adventure and musical challenge. (How did he get away with that for so long?) So make sure he doesn't claim the position of frontman. Let him concentrate on his guitar and leave the lead vocals to you. He can sing harmony and do the lead vocals in crossroads and badge, but no more.

I just heard a rumour that you and Eric may put together a Cream reunion , and put together a new album , I hope it's all true , I have been a Cream fan from day one , I have also collected as many Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton solo albums as possible , and they are all great ! > I hope you and Eric do it , and I hope you will include Ginger as well , to me Ceram would not be Cream without Ginger !

Dear Jack, when I was 19 & cream had recently broken up I was hitching with a friend up the west coast of scotland. A nice bloke in a small ferrari stopped and gave us a ride even though we were making rude gestures; went to a great deal of trouble rearrainging his baby and luggage to squeeze us in with our packs. Thanks for going to all that trouble and for the memory.

Not a regular surfer but just heard about your illness. So glad you fought back, that's the Bruce spirit. A revived Cream would be good because how can all these years go by and that good stuff not be played again? Tell Eric everyone says so. But the most important thing is that you keep on singing and playing Jack stuff. Happy Christmas.

At first I could not take it for real, the rumoured reunion but there it is, its now official: after 37 Years of wishing & hoping its finally true: the three Gods of contemporary music are leaving the Olympus and are showing us their good grace.... But it will be a hefty pelgrimage to London, next year. Only 4 shows are planned and I'm afraid that lots of tickets will go to people who are close to the nucleus of the musical-industrial complex. Nonetheless I'm thrilled and will do anything to get there... This is the text I borrowed from Eric's [Where's Eric] site:

CREAM REUNION: IT'S OFFICIAL! After weeks of speculation it was announced today by Eric Clapton that legendary 60s supergroup Cream will reunite for 4 shows at London's Royal Albert Hall. The venue was the scene of the trio's last appearance in 1968.

Concert appearances have been scheduled for May 2005. Information regarding ticket sales has not yet been made public. These are the only Cream concerts scheduled. Details will be posted here as they become available.

Eric Clapton made the announcement on BBC Radio 2's Johnnie Walker show. The shows will be recorded. Eric also said that tickets will go on sale soon.

After leaving John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1966, Eric accepted drummer Ginger Baker's offer to start a new band. Eric suggested bassist Jack Bruce. During its two-year life span, Cream - as in "cream of the crop" - released four albums: Fresh Cream (1966), Disraeli Gears (1967), Wheels of Fire (1968), and Goodbye (1968). The band's performances were not a series of three-minute hit song recreations but featured ground-breaking long-form improvisation around album cuts. The band's final two performances on 26 November 1968 at London's Royal Albert Hall were filmed. Farewell Cream has been released on DVD demonstrating the band's continuing popularity over the years. In the decades since the band broke up in late 1968, countless musicians have pointed to the power trio as an important influence on their own playing and style and the hard rock genre.

Cream reunited once before in January 1993 when they performed three songs at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Just read the announcement of Dick Heckstall-Smith's death. Dick's contribution to british jazz and blues has been inestimable and his will be a very very sad loss not only for his friends and family but for lovers of all good music. With two thirds of the great Graham Bond Organisation playing in London in April I hope that the Cream reunion could also be used as a tribute to Dick as well

What a weekend for receiving mixed news... The bad news first is that Dick Heckstall-Smith has passed away. What a great shame and what a great player. His playing on "Things We Like" in particular was quite inspired. I saw him play in concert with Jack many years ago, and he was an outstanding musician.

It must be especially heartbreaking for Jack, coming as it does, so soon after recovering from his own serious illness. D H-S will be greatly missed amongst all lovers of great jazz and blues.

Of course, very sadly, that puts a hude dampener on the good news. The latter is of course that Eric finally confirmed the rumours of the long awaited Cream Reunion. He spoke on last Friday's BBC Radio 2 "Johnny Walker Show" and revealed that 4 shows will be played next May at Cream's ancestral concert home - The Royal Albert Hall in London.

Apparently they will all be recorded for posterity. (I hope they receive better treatment than the last recordings made there of Cream back in 1968.)

And I suppose I'd better start queueing now.....

I'm sure we are all saddened by the death of Dick Heckstall-Smith. I remember buying my first Alexis Korner LP on Ace of Clubs and being turned on by the the music. Graham Bond followed, then I managed to see Dick with the Mayall Bare Wires band, which contained the nucleus of Collosseum. I saw Collosseum many, many times and they remain to this day one of my favourite bands - one of my favourite numbers being Tanglewood 65. How will he be replaced on the forthcoming tour, I wonder. I only saw him with Jack on two occasions but thoroughly enjoyed his contributions. One of my favourites is his playing on a trio with John James the acoustic guitarist. I remember he was in the crowd at the Cuicoland debut at Londons Jazz Cafe, enjoying his mate's new line up. I have just got his book and was looking forward to getting stuck into it when I was stunned by the news on Jack's web site. A great guy, a great player and a stalwart of the great British Blues scene. Rest in peace, Dick.

Jack,

I am so sorry to hear of Dick's death...he was a fantastic musician and the godfather of the British blues scene for so many years...he will be terribly missed.

After hearing Fresh Cream in 1966 and later Disraeli Gears I was taken aback when I first heard the Colosseum classic, 'Those who are about to die, we salute you'.

What a band! the fact that they are still making records AND touring is a testament to the great music that Jon Hiseman and the band have written and played over all these years.

It's ironic that with Dick's illness, Jon's wife Barbara Thompson has been filling in on saxes with Colosseum on gigs. Given Barbara's own battle's with illness the band still gets it on!

As soon as I get home tonight I will slip on the Colosseum live DVD and relive the great Dick Heckstall-Smith as he would like to be remembered...on fire with one of the world's most underated bands.

I hope your health is improving and it's not too long before you are back on the road.

I am gonna sit on the beach this weekend and crack a nice cold beer in memory of Dick, one of the best!

Have a great Christmas and best wishes to all Jack Bruce fans around the globe.

Phil.

Hi Jack, sincere condolences for the loss of your friend, Dick H-S. Sadly, or perhaps fortunately, I read of his passing while listening to his dual-soloing on Colosseum's "Those About To Die..."

There has always been, for me, a shortlist of names that would make me prick up my ears when I heard them. One of those names was Dick Heckstall-Smith.

I hope he enjoys the big jam in the sky. RIP Dick.

Deepest regrets on the loss of your friend, Dick Heckstall-Smith. I remember first hearing him on "Songs For A Tailor" and having to defend his playing to the college jazz-band members I hung out with at school (this was pre-Bitches Brew, so college jazzers were very closed off to anything outside their big-band-bebop-Miles universe).I've always found his music to be challenging, but emotionally and intellectually rewarding and it was worth following his career up to the end. Incidentally, I just finished reading "Blowing The Blues" a couple of days ago and I'm impressed with his deep committment to his musical vision and I'm glad he got to tell his life story. Sorry again. P.S. I eventually won most of those college debates.

Once in a while, a definitive song comes along. Some examples: Purple Haze, We don't get fooled again, Wanted Dead or Alive, and many more. These songs are the ones you LOVE the first time you hear them, and from then on. I was in High School when I first heard White Room. It took over 30 yrs for me to even start to grow a bit tired of it. Even though I don't play it as often, It still sends shivers down my spine. So perfectly written. Jack, Thanks so much for all the music. Live Cream Vol II is still one of my most prized possessions. My kids knew who Cream was before they started school. Best Regards, Dave Pickel PS-Please take the re-united Cream to the New York area :)

Jack:

How about LAZARUS RISING as the album name?

Thanks for taking my suggestion, that evening at Don Quixote's in Denver, for creating an acoustic version of "As You Said" with your son, Malcolm.

Coming in on the 4th beat for the Sunshine guitar solo, Cole Porter's Refrain from "Night & Day" in Octaves may work (starting with E5 on the 9th position to G5 on the 12th; fretting and opening the 3rd string during chording also seems to work here). Playing Sunshine in E, I think the refrain ends in G Major. After a 3 beat tacet interval to finish the bar, I play a unison bend on C# , then B C# G A for the main sunshine riff, which again becomes the subdominant in E, leading back to tonic.

Additional words for Strange Brew:

"On a Rainbow Malestrom in an Ancient Sea

We will take our Stand for Eternity..Because.....

You Know All Else is Lost"
